Joseph Kosinski's Oblivion gets a cast, loses its name

Ever since watching  Tron Legacy, I’ve been eagerly anticipating director Joseph Kosinski’s next project. Legacy was far from perfect, but most of it’s shortcomings were script related, while the direction was spot on. So when I first heard of  Oblivion, and read the almost Alastair Reynolds-like sci-fi premise, it definitely intrigued me:

In a future where the Earth’s surface has been irradiated beyond recognition, the remnants of humanity live above the clouds, safe from the brutal alien Scavengers that stalk the ruins. But when surface drone repairman Jak discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off an unstoppable chain of events that will force him to question everything he knows.

Thus far, Tom Cruise was the only definite casting in the role of Jak, but according to Variety, ex-Bond girl Olga Kurylenko has now been cast as his wife, while Andrea Riseborough (who can currently be seen in Madonna’s W.E.) has landed the role of the girl in the pod. They beat out a veritable who’s who of female actress to get the parts. Jessica Chastain, Brit Marling, Noomi Rapace, Hayley Atwell, Diane Kruger, Kate Beckinsale and Olivia Wilde had all tested for the two roles previously.

The film title has also been in a mysterious flux. Originally called Oblivion, it was changed to Horizons and then back to Oblivion when Disney acquired the film. But now it’s been changed again to… Well, nothing. It actually doesn’t have a title at this moment.

The Film-Formerly-Known-As-Oblivion is scheduled to begin shooting sometime in the next 2 months.
