You know what’s the one sad thing about super-hero films? That they employ every trick in the book of Hollywood magic to look so awesome, as the feats seen on screen are in no way safely imitable in reality. Trust me, when you wake up in an ICU suffering concussions and stab wounds while still dressed as Captain America, you begin to realise that guns beat plastic shields any day of the week.
Which is why when Kick-Ass came out, people took notice, as the title character was a fledgling wannabe hero who took as much of a beating in return for the ones he dished out. The film was a big hit at the box office, so a sequel was inevitable. Which is something that creator Mark Millar was only too happy to talk about.
As for his other project, a modern day take on Jesus Christ, Millar explained that it would be a straight forward, respectful version of the religous icon, something that Millar is not particularly well-known for, given his tendency to skewer everything from politics to religions in his work.
“A lot of people are surprised because much of my work is irreverent and expect the same with American Jesus,” Millar said. “But I want it to be a beautiful film. A film about the returned Jesus Christ has amazing artistic potential. Jesus shows up in the middle of the financial crisis, America is in turmoil and the Eurozone is collapsing. They are quite apocalyptic times that we are living in with the gap between rich and poor.”
“It is the reverse of The Omen, which is about a kid who finds out he is the anti-Christ. This is a kid who finds out he is Jesus Christ.”
Millar is also hard at work getting more of his creator-owned properties onto the big screen, as the popular writer is currently attempting to see big screen versions of Supercrooks, War Heroes and Nemesis optioned.
Nemesis is one of my particularly favourite comics from Millar, as it plays out as the opposite to Kick-Ass, with the debut of the worlds very first super-villain, with all kinds of chaos following in his wake.
