The Host teaser trailer – Damn, I may actually have to watch this

My vitriol for Stephanie Meyer’s emo vampire series is pretty well documented. I’m pretty sure that in the far distant future, when hi-tech archaeologists sift through the logs of this ancient Earth communication network called NTRNT, they will more than likely find occurrences of my name juxtaposed with terms such as “Twilight” and “Crap”.

However, I have to admit that Meyer’s other literary work, The Host, has interested me. No, I don’t mean the book – I still think she writes like a puppy-love sick 12 year-old who learnt emotions from bad soap operas -but Gattaca writer/director Andrew Nicol has adapted the alien invasion story for the screen, and this newly released teaser trailer is certainly grabbing my attention.

Melanie Stryder [is] one of the last humans putting up a fight against an alien species called Souls. These parasites invade human bodies, fuse to each person’s consciousness and systematically erase their personalities. Melanie is captured by the aliens and implanted by a Soul called Wanderer, something of a legend because of all of the “hosts” she has attached to on numerous planets. Wanderer’s goal is to get Melanie to give up the remaining pockets of humans, but instead the alien finds Melanie to be unique in her unwillingness to surrender her consciousness. Wanderer is so overwhelmed by Melanie’s memories and feelings, the alien is driven to reconnect with Melanie’s old life.

While it is true that I am sucker for stories including the words “alien” and “invasion”, and that this geeky fetish may be skewing my bias a bit, you have to admit that that is an impressive teaser. It certainly gets your attention and curiosity without really showing you anything about the film itself, which is exactly what a teaser needs to accomplish. I also love the eerie way the eyes remain perfectly fixed throughout despite the faces changing continuously.

Now here’s just hoping that Andrew Nicol brings his “A” game, as despite having made some fantastic films in the past (Gattaca, S1mone, Truman Show, Lord of War) his last effort, In Time, was just a fetid pile of wasted ideas, poor storytelling and Justin Timberlake. Not a good combination, I tell you.

Holy shit. Andrew Niccol actually saw something in a Stephanie Meyers novel worth directing.
That must be one helluva novel. That or Niccol has vision like no one else.

And he only wrote Truman Show. Peter Weir directed it. Just sayin…
