Clive Barker wants a Pinhead on TV

With Horror movies being rebooted left, right and center, the well of ideas is quickly running dry. One such maestro of the horror genre, Clive Barker, who happens to be the man responisble for numerous terrifying big screen films, is back in the news again, thanks to his new plans to reinvigorate two of his cultiest film properties.

But he doesn’t want to see them on the big screen, oh no. Barker wants them to appear on smaller screens instead.

While Hellraiser has been vomiting direct to bargain bin movies into video shops for a while now, Barker wants to revamp that for television, alongside his other film, Nightbreed.

Nightbreed was a film that starred Craig Sheffer as Boon, a psychiatric patient who was framed for the murders committed by his very own doctor, played by David Cronenberg, eventually dying after being gunned down by the cops.

Resurrected in the legendary city of Midian, Boon found himself surrounded by monsters, who lived there and protected their metropolis from the “real monsters” of the human world.

The film was an ambitious undertaking, featuring dozens of monsters and effects, but studio meddling saw the final version watered down to a 90 minute disaster with over an hour of footage cut from it, with Barker lamenting the wasted opportunity.

“I don’t wish to be immodest, but our culture has sort of caught up withNightbreed,” Barker said about the TV project, “and we’re actively in conversation about doing a Nightbreed television series.

The general sense is that the movie failed because people didn’t want to associate with the monster. I think our culture is now more ready to embrace that ambiguity. I’m not a fan, but you’ve only got to look at Twilight, where obviously the monsters are the good guys and being celebrated.

It will be for cable, so it will have a chance to be as sexy or as graphic in terms of the violence as we need it to be. Have you seen Spartacus? Oh my god, it redefines gruesome.

As for Hellraiser appearing on TV, Barker is sitting that one out. Details are scant right now, but it seems that producer Sonar Entertainment want to focus on Pinhead, possibly in an anthology series of episodes where he introduces new tales.

Like that worked out so well for Freddy Krueger, right?

Still, it’s pretty encouraging to see Nightbreed returning, as the creature effects in that film were always amazing.

I can dig it. With some much possibility with mature cable channels, there is much they can do here. Dunno about Nightbreed – even if they replaced all the cut stuff that was a tad too out there to really work.
