First look at Jamie Foxx, Cristoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio in Django Unchained

There’s something about the prospect of Leonardo DiCaprio as a moustache-twirling villain that just gets me all kind of excited. Especially when he will be be evil-monologuing it out with Christopher Waltz and Jamie Foxx, in director Quention Tarantino’s spaghetti western/slave story, Django Unchained.

We probably still have a long time to wait for a trailer, but at least now we finally have a look at what the principal players will look like.

First up is DiCaprio’s Calvin Candie, the slave-owning and, judging by that menacing hammer, -abusing main antagonist of the film. He sure as hell looks the part, and I have a feeling that DiCaprio will be putting his prodigious talent to use to charismatically sneer and snarl his way through this.

We also have a look at Jamie Foxx’s eponymous slave, Django, and Christoph Waltz’s Dr King Schultz, the dentist-turned-bounty-hunter who frees Django to help him with a job, bringing Django into close proximity with Candie, who just happens to own his wife as a slave.

Foxx spoke to EW, where he spilled some more info on the film:

“Candie is a business man who owns a plantation called Candie Land, and that’s where my wife ends up being… we have to get in good with Candie, by me playing a valet for Christoph’s character.”

He described the film’s take on slavery as “controversial”, likening it back to the serious blaxploitation films of the 70’s, but as seen the through the unique vision of Quentin Tarantino:

“There’s a beautiful way [Tarantino] found for the characters to talk to each other. It’s mindblowing. You’ve never heard it this way. You’ve seen movies deal with slavery — or westerns that never dealt with slavery – do it the safe way. This way is like … wow.”

Here’s the film’s full synopsis, though I have to warn, it does get a little too spoilery for my liking, so you may want to skip it if you want to go into this one fresh.

Set in the South two years before the Civil War, “Django Unchained” stars Academy Award®-winner Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Academy Award®-winner Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles – dead or alive.

Success leads Schultz to free Django, though the two men choose not to go their separate ways. Instead, Schultz seeks out the South’s most wanted criminals with Django by his side. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago.

Django and Schultz’s search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Academy Award®-nominee Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of “Candyland,” an infamous plantation where slaves are groomed by trainer Ace Woody (Kurt Russell) to battle each other for sport. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz arouse the suspicion of Stephen (Academy Award®-nominee Samuel L. Jackson), Candie’s trusted house slave. Their moves are marked, and a treacherous organization closes in on them. If Django and Schultz are to escape with Broomhilda, they must choose between independence and solidarity, between sacrifice and survival…

Yeah, that sounds like the perfect Christmas Day movie, wouldn’t you say?
