Tom Cruise will be Van Helsing some vampires soon

Bah! Vampire films, they think they’re so awesome with their gothic, glittery take on the supernatural, attracting tween audiences and driving a wooden stake into the heart of the genre!

Which is why I love Vampire-Hunting films. There haven’t been too many of those recently, with the last really high profile big budget flick being the Stephen Sommers guilty pleasure, Van Helsing.

A bomb at the box office, not even the wolverine himself could have salvaged that mess. But like any decent public domain character, you can’t keep a good vampire slayer down. While Guillemero del Toro may no longer be attached to the latest take on Van Helsing, Tom Cruise still is, as he’ll be taking the lead role in the upcoming film.

Universal is financing, with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci writing and co-producing through their K/O Paper Products studio. The duo have been busy as of late, turning in scripts for films such as that other Cruise franchise, Mission Impossible, as well as Transformers, Star Trek and Prometheus, and are scheduled to for some scribing on a planned sequel for the Amazing Spider-Man.

“Alex and Roberto are extraordinarily talented writers and producers who know the value of a great story in building successful tent pole films,” Universal’s Adam Fogelson and Donna Langley said in a joint statement.

“They have been a major part of some of Hollywood’s biggest movies and television shows in recent history, and we’re eager to have them build on that success at Universal.”

Not everyone has been as big a fan of the writing twosome, but their record has more hits than misses right now. Plus, anything in comparison will be better than the last Van Helsing film.
