The woods are alive with the sound of lawsuits it seems, as The Evil Dead, much like its source material, just won’t stay dead. While a remake is currently beginning filming in sunny New Zealand, it seems that Sam Raimi’s diabolical creation is going to have some competition, from itself.

Because when Sam Raimi said that he was done with making Evil Dead sequels, a certain production company took that quote to heart, and have started work on their ED sequel.

Of course, Raimi is not happy about this, and has proceeded to gather his legal boomsticks to stop said abomination from occurring.

The original Evil Dead films, which were produced by Raimi and starred frequent collaborater Bruce Campbell, have gone on to become cult horror hits. The third and final film, Army of Darkness, wrapped up the franchise for good (I SLEPT TOO LONG!), with Raimi claiming that he would never make an Evil Dead 4.

So, Award Pictures took that quote, and decided, “Hey, an iconic film property is now up for grabs, legal obligations be damned!”. They’ve started work on Evil Dead 4: Consequences/Genesis of the Necronomicon, much to Raimi’s chagrin, as this film will totally interfere with the planned remake he says.

Original film distributor and current owner of the film rights (This might be a teensy bit important) have taken Award Pictures to court over the issue.

In case you’re interested in who exactly Award Pictures are, here’s the company website. Yep, that website totally smells of quality film production to me. Although to be honest, chances are pretty decent that the Award version of Evil Dead cannot be anywhere near as terrible as the planned, legit reboot.

Official synopsis;

In the film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

Jane Levy (“Suburgatory”) stars as Mia, Shiloh Fernandez (Deadgirl, Red Riding Hood) as David; Lou Taylor Pucci (Carriers) as Eric; Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield) as Olivia and Elizabeth Blackmore (“Legend of the Seeker”) as Natalie.

Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert, and Bruce Campbell are producing with a script written by Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues, with rewrites by (Gah) Diablo Cody. Alvarez directs.

    THAT’S their website?! That is the worst, laziest attempt at an online presence ever.

    At least try for something that looks vaguely appealing. My mum could design a better website than that
