Ray Liotta gets all roughed up in this first clip from Killing Them Softly

Despite the fact that I think that the original Coogan’s Trade was a far better title than it’s current decidedly neutral moniker, Killing Them Softly is still quite high up on my (apparently football field long) list of anticipated movies for 2012.

We’ve never really seen Brad Pitt in a straight up action role, which is something that kind of beggars belief. Despite his pretty boy origins, he is an extremely talented and versatile actor who has just about done it all, and under the very capable guidance of director Andrew Dominik (Chopper, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford), I’m expecting Pitt to turn in a truly menacing performance as a mob enforcer who has to track down some thieves who ripped off a high stakes mob sponsored card game.

Dominik has also surrounded Pitt with a number of veteran character actors, one of which – Ray Liotta, playing the hustler who ran the infamous card game – is not exactly having what you might call “a good day” in this first released clip.

Just a slight NSFW warning for some strong language in this clip.

I just love how Dominik frames this shot by never actually showing us the actual “fight” but rather letting our imagination fill in the blanks, as the camera pans across the trailer.

Synopsis:

Adapted from George V. Higgins’ novel and set in New Orleans, “Killing Them Softly” follows professional enforcer, Jackie Cogan (Pitt), who investigates a heist that occurs during a high stakes, mob-protected, poker game. The film also features Scoot McNairy (“Monsters”), Ben Mendelsohn (“Animal Kingdom”), Ray Liotta, Richard Jenkins (“The Visitor”), with James Gandolfini, Vincent Curatola, Max Casella, Sam Shepard and Bella Heathcote among others.
