Marvel's 2014 mystery movie has just about been revealed and it's not Black Panther!

We’ve been hearing the rumours for ages now already. Then came that “titanic” mid-credits reveal at the end of The Avengers, just adding more fuel to the fanboy fire. And now thanks to the guys over at Latino Review, it looks like it’s all but been confirmed:

Marvel is making a Guardians of the Galaxy movie in 2014!

Yes, it’s not the most shocking reveal, as Marvel has been laying down the bread crumb trail for ages, but up until now it’s almost exclusively just been fanboy speculation. Latino Review, who in the past have been very solid on their Marvel related scoops, report that a big official announcement about the film will be made at next week’s Comic Con in San Diego.

Adding weight to Latino’s scoop is the fact that The Hollywood Reporter is claiming the same info and more from their very own sources.

Between them they’ve managed to score a lot of information about the project, such as the fact that Nicole Perlman’s “incredible” script for the film will indeed be a time-travelling comedy-adventure, which will see the cosmic based team of heroes facing off against the Badoon, a race of reptilian intergalactic conquerors, some time in the far future. At some point they will be jumping back in time to interact with all the present day Avengers. (Maybe even share a shwarma or two?)

And yes, Thanos is in it!

In fact, the film is claimed to be the direct prequel for The Avengers 2, with Marvel’s newly proposed road map being as follows:

Iron Man 3 will be first out of the gate, seeing release on May 3, 2013, with Thor 2 later in the year on November 15, 2013. Marvel’s 2014 campaign then kicks off with Captain America 2 on April 4, 2014 and then finally, May 16, 2014 would see Guardians of the Galaxy being released as the big setup movie before 2015’s Avengers 2.

Now for those of you unfamiliar with the Guardians, here’s a quick rundown: Introduced in their very first incarnation way back in 1969, the Guardians of the Galaxy has had a changing roster of some of Marvel’s biggest cosmic based heroes, however they completely disappeared off the radar in later years.

After Marvel’s massive 2008 cosmic based Annihilation: Conquest event though, Earthling Peter Quill, aka Star Lord, rebanded the group from heroes who helped to fight in that war, to serve as a proactive interstellar team. This modern incarnation would prove to be extremely popular and is probably the basis for the movie.

In their ranks you’d find, obviously Star Lord – a soldier and adventurer who has had various alien gifted abilities over the years; Rocket Raccoon; a bipedal, hyper-intelligent talking raccoon with a penchant for rather big guns; Phylar-Vell, the inheritor of the mantle of Quasar and the superpower granting cosmic bands; Adam Warlock, a cosmic energy manipulating artificial human who very nearly attained a sort of godhood; Groot, a giant prince from a race of sentient trees, Vance Astro aka Major Victory, a time displace superhero who possesses Captain America’s shield; Bug, a kung-fu fighting insectoid from an alternative universe; Mantis, a precognitive “celestial madonna”; Gamora, the last member of her warrior race (her people were exterminated by the Badoon), who was trained and granted superhuman abilities by Thanos himself as a master assassin, before rebelling from him; and Drax the Destroyer, an artificially created superpowered being, birthed by the Titan god Chronos as purely for the purpose of killing Thanos.

Now as you can see, a Guardians movie will contain elements far more “out there” than anything Marvel has done before, which means that whomever they get to helm this will have their work cut out for them. If not handled correctly, this could stray too far into the cartoonish territory to fit in well enough with the rest of the Marvel universe, but done properly, it could be an incredibly imaginative and fun ride.

The who? I’m not following comics much these days, but has anyone outside of Marvel fans heard of this comic?

Well, they really only came into their own with much critical acclaim about 3-4 years ago, but you’re right, this is not a Captain America or Spider-Man.

Now normally, I would say that it’s going to take a lot to get the non-fans interested in this, but with the success of all of Marvel’s prior cinematic products as well as the fact that we’re probably going to see some lead in during one of the upcoming movies and I think it will be a bit of an easier sell than you might think. Also Marvel has sort of already done some of the PR legwork, by having a couple of the characters popping up in an individual capacity all over their animated products.

Well, at least they are not scraping the bottom of the barrel :p Seriously, this is just becoming a franchising machine. Consider those words in a decade, all yea Marvel fans, when the comic’s characters get commercially mauled like Star Wars was.

That’s actually a very valid concern, and an issue that I raised a while back. All these movies being made are awesome as they’re nicely filling out the Marvel tapestry, but there are some rumoured projects that really don’t deserve it. Luke Cage? LOLWHUT? He’s an ex-con who got unbreakable skin during a prison science project. That’s it. He has a horrible rogue’s gallery, and virtually no depth. In a team environment, he could work quite well, but carrying a movie by himself?

It’s because Marvel makes much more money off the movies than the comics. I wonder if fans ever stopped to think about that? How long before the films actively lead the comics, both in release types and canon?

I’m not a Marvel fan because I don’t consider it to have the best nose for talent and stories in comics. Despite their scale and problems, DC and Dark Horse individually have stronger characters and universes in their catalogs. Most of Marvel is How-To-Draw-Superheroes stuff, all largely from Jack Kirby. Stan Lee has shown time and again that if he had a knack for making characters, he lost it a while ago.

There is little depth and what they have is quickly being turned into mush on the big screen. Marvel is not maturing or celebrating comic culture with its films. It’s creating a manboy/womangirl geek subculture that simply narrows the scope and appeal of the industry. Its movies are doing nothing but damage to the larger comic world, even though it might spike the sales of certain titles.

I would argue that DC has done more FOR comic book culture with stuff like Dark Knight and even Constantine than Marvel with its entire film catalog.
