Despite the fact that they still need to find an actress to portray the female villain after talks with Jessica Biel broke down, James Mangold’s The Wolverine has just begun shooting down in Australia. And in true Oz fashion, the first thing they’re doing after getting there is building a prison.

At least that’s what these new concept art and set-construction photos tell us.

According to Australian site if.com, who first published the pics, the prison is said to be a WWII Japanese camp, which ties into earlier reports that the film will be making use of some flashbacks to flesh out even more of Wolverine’s history. As an Ozzy himself, Jackman was quite proud of the workmanship of his fellow countrymen, as he told The Sydney Morning Herald:

“It  speaks to the incredible craftsmanship [here] that we can make so much of Japan – feudal Japan, urban Japan- all here on our soundstages in Australia.”

The interesting point here about this Japanese camp for me though, is the inclusion of the well. Now, it may just be nothing, but the moment I saw it, I was instantly reminded of 2007’s Wolverine #56. Titled “The man in the pit” it was writer Jason Aaron’s first issue of his critically acclaimed run, and also one of the best stand-alone Wolverine stories ever told. It was told from the perspective of Wendell, a normal family man, with normal problems. Every day, when he goes to work as a prison guard, Wendell gets to let off a bit of steam though. You see, there is a man who has been captured and is being kept at the bottom of a pit. Wendell doesn’t know who he is or where he came from, but it’s Wendell’s job is to shoot him. Shoot him with a great big machine gun over and over again. The fact that the man never dies and just keeps healing up, eventually gets to Wendell, and in the midst of all the shooting he starts talking to the man. Soon the man has Wendell questioning everything about his job, his marriage and his life. You know, in between all the shooting.

It was an incredible issue that showed a side of Wolverine that you rarely got to see, which is that even without popping claws he could still be very effective at breaking down his enemies. It could also make for one pretty amazing and original prison escape sequences if translated to film.

As I mentioned in the opening line, Biel was approached but just a few days later it was revealed that negotiations went South and she withdrew from the project. They still need to recast the role now.
