It's up, up and away in these first images and video from CLOUD ATLAS

The latest film from Tom Tykwer and the now 50% less wang Wachowskis, Cloud Atlas is neck deep in production, with the usual veil of secrecy draped over it. Provided that you haven’t read the David Mitchell novel that it’s based on, of course.

Set across various generations, timelines and genders, very little visual information of the film has managed to escape the sets where it’s being filmed right now. Until now that is, as one massive info-dump of photography has managed to escape.

A reluctant voyager crossing the Pacific in 1850; a disinherited composer blagging a precarious livelihood in between-the-wars Belgium; a high-minded journalist in Governor Reagan’s California; a vanity publisher fleeing his gangland creditors; a genetically modified “dinery server” on death-row; and Zachry, a young Pacific Islander witnessing the nightfall of science and civilisation — the narrators of Cloud Atlas hear each other’s echoes down the corridor of history, and their destinies are changed in ways great and small.

Starring Tom Hanks, Hugh Grant, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving, Ben Whishaw, Susan Sarandon, Jim Broadbent, Bae Doona and James D’Arcy, the cast assumes numerous roles over the course of the six tales in the film, somehow influencing the characters around them, in these pictures from Entertainment Weekly.

It’s looking quite ambitious so far, while Hugh Grant describes his characters as “incredibly evil”, and is out near the end of this year.

UPDATE: Here’s a video of Cloud Atlas footage. Get it whiles hot and not litigious.

UPDATE: Found a different source after initial video was removed.

Damn. It’s been removed. But I luckily got to watch it before the long arm of the law showed up, and sweet transgender filmmakers! That looks ambitious as all hell. If they can pull it off, with be simply epic.
