LEGO movie gets a new title, confirmed plot details, new castings… and Batman?

Just yesterday we brought you word that LEGO: Piece of Resistance – now sporting the punless title of just LEGO – the animated film based on the popular Danish toy blocks  and bane of barefooted parents everywhere, gained some serious dramatic gravitas with the casting of Morgan Freeman and Elizabeth Banks. But we still had no idea what they were going to be doing in the film.

Well now, we’re finally getting some plot details and it involves a certain caped crusader.

Moneyball star Chris Pratt will voice Emmett, an “ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifgure”; Freeman will voice Vitruvius, an ancient mystic; and Banks will voice Lucy, a “tough as nails” LEGO girl, who mistakenly identifies Emmett as the “Masterbuilder”, the mythical saviour of the LEGO world, and ropes him into a quest to stop an evil tyrant. And helping Emmet, Lucy and Vitruvius on this quest will be a heroic minifigure with whom Lucy shares an interesting past: Batman!

The Dark Knight, voiced by Arrested Development funnyman Will Arnett, has already proven himself immensely popular as a diminutive and blocky crimefighter in the LEGO Batman videogames, so there actually is a logic behind including him. This of course opens up the question of what other famous characters from the incredibly popular videogame series we might be seeing in the film. Harry Potter? Luke Skywalker? Indiana Jones?

In the meantime, fans are getting a great opportunity to be involved in the film as LEGO are giving fans a chance to design a vehicle that will be used in the movie, as co-writers and -directors Phil Lord & Christopher Miller (21 Jump Street, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) explains in this promo video:
