Joss Whedon talks GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Yes, Joss Whedon

If you’ve been following all the Marvel movie related news, then that headline might be a bit weird. You see, while Joss Whedon may the guiding hand behind Marvel’s biggest franchise, it’s James Gunn that has recently landed the job of turning possibly Marvel’s most challenging cinematic project, The Guardians of the Galaxy, into reality.

But while Gunn and the rest of Marvel are keeping pretty mum on how they’re going to tackle theGuardians, ruffling a few fan feathers in anticipation, Whedon is here to calm then down and tell us that we should have some faith in Gunn’s “twisted” vision.

The fan favouriter writer/director – who recently signed an exclusive two year deal to not only write/direct The Avengers sequel and develop a S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series, but also do creative consulting on some of their other endeavours –  spoke to MTV about the appointment of Gunn, a relative unknown who only really has the Nathan Fillion horror film Slither, and the dark superhero comedy, Super, under his belt.

“James is what makes me think it will work. I myself was sort of like, ‘Well, I liked Rocket Raccoon as a kid, but I’m not sure how that plays [to a wider audience].’ And then they said, ‘Well, we’re thinking about using James Gunn.’ And I said, ‘Oh, then no, you’re fine.’ He is so off the wall, and so crazy, but so smart, such a craftsman and he builds from his heart. He loves the raccoon. Needs the raccoon. This is the guy who wrote The Specials. People don’t understand how influential that movie was about heroes, about taking heroes and making them mundane. And [he directed]Super.”

For the uninitiated, Rocket Raccon, would be the bipedal, talking, smoking and borderline psychotic anthropomorphic space raccon who is one of the teams main members and one of a couple of pretty weird aspects about the property. You know, like the giant sentient tree prince who only speaks using one word, his name “Groot”. Getting that crazy world to exist side by side with something as relatively realistic as Iron Man, is going to be on hell of a tall order.

Chris McCoy was recently hired to rework Nicole Perlman’s script, but it looks like Gunn is going to be putting his own stamp on it as well:

“He has a very twisted take on it, but it all comes from a real love for the material. It’s going to be hard for the humans to keep up. I know he’s going to come from left field and I’m going to go, ‘What?’ And then, ‘Of course, why didn’t I think of that?’ And then I’m going to beat him!”

A new completely unconfirmed logline for the film popped up online a week or two ago, on Hollywood database site The Grid. If it turns out to be true, it is the biggest indicator of the new direction the film is going to head in, describing it as being “about a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.”

The U.S. pilot bit could only be Vance Astro aka Major Victory (that’s him in the blue and white rocking Captain America’s shield in the bottom right of the above pic), who would be a great “in” for audiences into this very alien world. He hasn’t shown up in the promo artwork that Marvel used to tease the film, so it could be that this whole thing is a bunch of bupkiss, or they’re holding back the reveal.
