IRON MAN 3 will not be a serious movie

After seeing the first full trailer for Iron Man 3, it seemed like the frivolous days of Tony Stark being an alcoholic ass in an armoured tin can were behind us. That glimpse of the full product felt more serious, more mature than the rock ‘n roll lifestyle that Jon Favreau had spun with his two movies.

And it’s something that kinda made me sad-pants. Well according to director Shane Black and Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige, that may not be the case, so hang onto your AC/DC albums and Black Sabbath shirts, because Iron Man 3 might have some fun in it after all!

Speaking to The Western Australian, Feige said that while the film did have a serious tone, but one that didn’t overshadow the playboy personality of Stark;

It’s not a serious movie, but we seriously dig into exploring more of Tony. The trick is just trying to make great movies. We try to make them all great, all different and all fresh. What you’ll see in Iron Man 3 is some very unique directions that were taken.

Adding to that, Black explained that the third film was looking to re-capture what made the first two films special, without falling for the tired trope of bigger is better;

We’re not aiming for bigger, necessarily. We’re aiming for different and fresh and new. It’s all about capturing that lightning-in-a-bottle feel, about trying to get as much into this as we can. We’re looking to get a ton of thrills into a short space, to make a nice little stew for you.

And even Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr, had something to add to the conversation, saying that with Iron Man 3, it was all about having the right crew present;

You can dissect why [The Avengers] was the right movie with the right people and the right director at the time. But we feel the same way about Iron Man 3 now.

See, this is what made the Iron Man films so much fun. Whereas Batman, Spider-Man and Superman keep secret identities and brood about the decision, Stark says testicles to that idea, and lives a life on the edge.

I don’t dislike the more serious tones of those particular superheroics, but Iron Man has always encapsulated the fun of the character  providing a different experience altogether.

And it’d be swell to see that attitude remain for the third film.
