"Conan! What is best in life?" Producer Chris Morgan spills more LEGEND OF CONAN details

It’s been just over a month since we first learned that Arnold Schwarzenegger would soon be back on our screens to crush his enemies, see them driven before him, and to hear the lamentation of their women.

And now producer/screenwriter Chris Morgan has shared some more details about the aging barbarian king’s last hurrah.

Speaking to the LA Times, Morgan revealed that he convinced the 65-year old Governator to return to the role that made him famous but equating it to catching up with an old friend:

“Not a reboot, not a remake. Just an update. Where has the character been all this time? A catch-up with Conan.”

That catch-up will take place deep into Conan’s rule over his kingdom, with him having seen quite a few winters already, and taking it a bit easy in his halcyon days.

“He’s not going out and fighting battles, but he ends up getting drawn into something, and he has to access the barbarian he was in his youth. I love that Conan has been many things in his life, notably a pirate, a major tactician and a commander of men. In this movie, we’re going to tap into some of those things – things you haven’t seen on screen yet.”

And Conan is going to need all those unseen tools to get him through this adventure, because in case you haven’t noticed, Schwarzenegger, just like Conan, is no longer the physical specimen he was in his youth, something that Morgan – and I, to be honest – wants to see captured:

“I want the warrior whose joints have started to fuse together, who has to crack the cartilage so he can pick up a sword again. I want the guy who’s not necessarily lost a step, but there’s some rust he has to shake off. I want to embrace that. It makes it a greater hero story.

Conan needs to be faced with challenges. The greatest challenge to him isn’t the armies that are set before him. It’s, on some level, self-doubt, a little bit of slowing down and forcing yourself to be heroic beyond what people expect of you. What I don’t want is for him to step back in and look the same. That would defeat the purpose of our story.”

Morgan has been rather busy over the last few years churning out scripts for Wanted, the upcoming 47 Ronin as well as the last four Fast and the Furious movies and his involvement in Legend of Conan past the producer’s stage is still in doubt, as he still needs to produce another script for Fast and Furious 7 (yes, there’s going to be a seventh movie). But Morgan – who refers to himself as a “huge fan” and who claims that John Millius’s original film was one of the biggest influences on his career – expresses an enthusiasm for Conan that certainly outweighs his current work commitments:

“No matter what, I’ll be there every step of the way. Whether it’s penning this quickly or selecting the writer, it’s me guiding the process or being a real honest-to-god producer. I’m excited either way. I’m really, really stoked.”

I certainly hope that his zeal doesn’t get the better of him and he doesn’t end up half-arsing the script just so that he can do it, because this tale certainly has the potential to really be something amazing.
