It’s award season. With Tinsel Town getting ready to attempt to win little statues of gold men covering their gentials in various categories, you can bet your buns that once again, the judging criteria is going to be slick and leaning towards the artsy side of the spectrum.
And that’s all well and fine, but when it comes to real success, people vote with their wallets. So which ten films of 2012 were the biggest money-makers? Details, after the jump.
And in the number one spot, The Avengers, something which should surprise no one, ever. While that was a given, it’s the inclusion of other films on the list that makes for some fine reading. The Hunger Games was a breakout star, earning a ton o’ cash in the process, while Ray Romano voicing a furry pachyderm proved to be a bigger draw than the latest Pixar effort Brave or the ambitious Rise of the Guardians.
- The Avengers – $1.511 Billion
- The Dark Knight Rises – $1.08 Billion
- Skyfall – $1.023 Billion
- Ice Age 4 – $875 Million
- The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – $824 Million
- The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 2 – $813 Million
- The Amazing Spider-Man – $752 Million
- Madagascar 3 – $742 Million
- The Hunger Games – $686 Million
- MIB3 – $624 Million
And for some added fun, here are the top ten worst money-making films, from the American domestic box office:
- The ghastly love of Johnny X – $117
- Playback – $264
- Apartment 43 – $383
- Meeting Evil – $525
- Gottfried Hellwein and the dreaming child – $601
- Death of a superhero – $607
- Citizen Gangster – $625
- Nature calls – $646
- The decoy bride – $759
- Jason Becker: Not dead yet – $1094
You know what’s really funny? Chances are, that the bottom ten are going to be way more eligible than the top ten, when it comes to Oscar night.

Shouldn’t it be Ice Age 4, continental drift?

I’m very surprised by the Hunger Games. I thought it would’ve made more money… but the worst movie only making $117???

I’m shocked at how much it made. Didn’t think it deserved to be in the top ten at all.

Why would that be? It was pretty well received critically (I rather enjoyed it myself), and already had a huge built-in fan base from the books. They would have needed to seriously stuff up the movie for it to not be a success in some form or another.
