Frank Darabont to rewrite GODZILLA before production kicks off in March

Godzilla may be an overpowering foe created from nightmare fuel and some leftover Fukushima radiation, a-bomb style, but if there’s one thing that not even the king of monsters himself can work up a sweat against, it’s a dodgy script.

With filming set to begin in March, the monster flick has already encountered a few hurdles, from the departure of producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee, through to the call for a quick script rewrite, from none other than Frank “Shawshank Redemption” Darabont. Guess it’s time to get busy destroyin’ cities, or get busy dyin’ at the hands of a giant irradiated moth monster.

While Lin and Lee are have their hands full with other Warner Bros projects such as Justice League and a Lego movie, according to Deadline it seems that current right holders Legendary Pictures have squeezed them out, due to a dispute over pay from the original deal. Expect that matter to hit courts, which could impact on the final budget of the film.

As for Darabont, he’ll be tweaking and fine-tuning the final script mere weeks before shooting begins, based off of the work that Max Borenstein, David “The Expendables” Callahan, David “Man of Steel” Goyer and Drew “Iron Man 3” Pearce. Can too many scribes spoil the metropolis-destroying monster soup?

We’ll have to wait and see, although after watching the superb The Mist that Darabont directed, I’m cautiously optimistic here.
