Can you smelllll what The Rock is cooking? It's Brett Ratner's HERCULES

Now, for some of you who, that statement doesn’t come as a surprise. Without knowing about the upcoming film, if I had to walk around town telling people that The Rock is set to play Hercules, the son of Zeus, I would be met with mostly “duh!” reactions as it really is a very obvious casting choice, and it also seems like a very good idea.

However, there is one catch: The film is helmed by Brett “X-Men: The Last Stand” Ratner, easily one of my least favourite directors and is as commercial as they come. Now, I might just be prejudiced because he came very close to killing our beloved X-Men franchise, but given a few years I’m sure our wounds will heal and the world will forget…maybe.

Hercules will be adapted from the Radical Studio’s graphic novel, Hercules: The Thracian Wars and as I said before, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson seems like the logical choice for this role and, very surprisingly, he has forged himself a relatively respected acting career so I’m giving this film a definite chance to be quite a lot of fun.

The official plot synopsis states:

Fourteen hundred years ago, a tormented soul walked the earth that was neither man nor god. Hercules was the powerful son of the god king Zeus, for this he received nothing but suffering his entire life. After twelve arduous labors and the loss of his family, this dark, world-weary soul turned his back on the gods finding his only solace in bloody battle. Over the years he warmed to the company of six similar souls, their only bond being their love of fighting and presence of death. These men and woman never question where they go to fight or why or whom, just how much they will be paid. Now the King of Thrace has hired these mercenaries to train his men to become the greatest army of all time. It is time for this bunch of lost souls to finally have their eyes opened to how far they have fallen when they must train an army to become as ruthless and blood thirsty as their reputation has become.

It is quite easy to tell that Dwayne Johnson will be in full Scorpion King mode for this film, so he’ll definitely be treading on familiar territory. Is anyone else suddenly humming Godsmack’s “I Stand Alone”?  I’m definitely going to keep an eye on this project as the Rock has strangely always managed to bring a touch of class to whatever film he’s starring in and he is a definitely crowd-pleaser, so I won’t be surprised if audiences take to Hercules like Brett Ratner takes to nauseating film geeks.

For now though, we’ll just have to be content knowing that, somewhere out there, Dwayne Johnson is punching a stuntman in the face. The release date for Hercules has been set as 8 August, 2014.

  1. This will go the same way that the last Conan movie went, down the toilet.

Most wrong thing for me in Conan was the casting.I like Jason Momoa, and he does do “bad ass” well, but he aint no Conan. Rock as Hercules is a much better fit in my opinion. Hopefully this movie does a few other things better than Conan too.
