Robotech goes commercial with a new director

Well folks, it was bound to happen sometime. With Guillermo Del Toro, the busiest man in Hollywood, currently slapping the finishing touches on his sci-fi monster-punching epic Pacific Rim, other similar high-concept films were bound to get put on the fast track and the first one will be sure to leave fanboys drooling: Robotech.

While the news is no doubt good, the announcement that Nic Mathieu is in talks to helm the project will no doubt be heavily debated on the internet. If you aren’t sure who Nic Mathieu is, don’t worry – this will be his first feature film after doing the commercial circuit.

Now, Warner Bros. must have quite a lot of faith in Mr. Mathieu if they are asking him to helm a project that will be closely scrutinized by multitudes of fans of the original anime franchise, every scrap of information about the film analysed to the most minute detail. Very daunting, to say the least.

If you aren’t familiar with Robotech, here is what Comingsoon has to say about it:

A sprawling sci-fi epic, Robotech takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship’s energy source known as “protoculture,” and the planet’s survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.

A few more familiar names are set to produce, thankfully, including Akiva Goldsman and strangely enough, Tobey Maguire.

Prepare for the first of a quite a few giant stompy robot films to head our way soon, as I am sure quite a few other studios will jump on Del Toro’s coattails. Can someone please NOT tell Michael Bay about this? Those of you who are a bit more familiar with the anime than myself, please give us your thoughts and hopes for the Robotech film?

  1. Just a heads up, 2nd paragraph after the image (“Now, Warner Bros….”) has a few typos / missing words. Feel free to delete this comment, didn’t know how else to contact you =)

Tobey Maguire cast as Lynn Minmay. He does NOT fit as Rick Hunter or Roy “Skull Leader” Fokker. Please let them not use Minmay’s “brand new song” that she sang in almost EVERY episode!!! Still have the Zentraedi theme as ringtone for work people,Roy Fokker theme for friends, SDF1 for someone and Earth Government for parents! Gots the original 3 seasons on DVD, so please do this JUSTICE!!

This is very exciting news regarding the RLAM. I’m an actor on a
Robotech mission, would love to get a step closer.
