Move aside Dwayne Johnson, here comes another HERCULES…in 3D!

Oh Hollywood, you have some brilliant timing these days. Announce one big budget film, and you can be certain that a leeching mockbuster studio such as Asylum films will immediately pounce on the same idea, but twisted enough to avoid getting sued. Most of the time.

With two films set in the Oval office on the way, Olympus has fallen and White House Down, that rule is clearly in effect. And now, we’ve got tow Hercules films on the way as well. Hercules! Hercules! Hercules!

The first such demigod deltoid film happens to be the one being helmed by Brett Ratner that will star the most electrifying bastard son in all of Greek history, The Rock. That one will have the pantheon’s champ getting an army into shape while doing some inner soul-searching, and of course, Dwayne Johnson has been perfectly cast for this.

And in the blue corner, we have a new challenger from Millenium vision, who are looking to stick to the myths this time, with Renny Harlin directing! A more classical tale that has been penned by scribes Sean Hood and Hanna Weg, this Hercules 3D tale starts shooting in May with a $70 million budget.

And since they’re using Bulgaria as the country of choice for this epic, they’ll probably get quite a bit of Greece for their dollar. Harlin seems set on making his Hercules a tad more gritty, as he explained to THR that “It’s not a comic book, cartoony fantasy thing. It’s closer to Gladiator than flying horses.” Someone ring Russell Crowe up quickly.

And then Harlin turned the other cheek when he explained why two such distinct Hercules films could exist on the same plain;

I think these are very different kinds of movies in their approach to this legendary character. Obviously, Hercules has been portrayed in many different films, such as the Disney animated movie. I wish them luck. Ancient Greek mythology is an endless source of good stories. Let’s see both movies be successful.

Well good luck to Harlin then. My money will still be on Kevin Sorbo returning as a third Hercules act to muck things up. Who’s with me?
