Zack Snyder talks MAN OF STEEL

By now, it’s safe to say that excitement for the upcoming June release of Man of Steel has just received a massive charge of yellow solar radiation excitement thanks to the recent trailer that put the Super back into Superman. The last son of Krypton is meant to be a symbol for hope, and that’s how I’m feeling right now for the reboot of the first caped superhero.

And it certainly helps when you’ve got a director on board that feels the same way, as Zack Snyder recently spoke about how his Clark Kent, Henry Cavill, was made for the part, while also giving those super-powers of his a more modern touch.

“God, he’s so Supermanish it’s crazy!” Snyder said to SFX.

There was a telling moment – we put him in the Christopher Reeve costume, because we didn’t have a suit yet, we just had the old spandex suit. He stepped out of the trailer and no one laughed. It’s the difference between being Superman and dressing up like Superman.

If I’m dressed up like Superman it’s like a Halloween costume. If you’re Henry it’s your clothes. It’s awesome. Watch the movie and you’re like ‘Holy $!@#, that’s Superman.’ And it’s not weird or crazy, it’s just cool.

As for those super-powers, Snyder says that being mistaken for a bird or a plane isn’t as easy as it seems in his flick;

It’s a more violent experience. It’s raw. It takes effort to do it, and that’s what we were really going for. It’s almost like there’s this kind of Right Stuff quality to it. He’s constantly booming around, accelerating. You think he’s going as fast as he can and then it’s like ‘Yeeaahh!’ He’s always got an extra gear he can use.

Snyder also spoke about he wanted to put his own spin on the planet Krypton, a world that has generally used the artic and crystal style of set decoration ever since the original film came out in 1978. But expect Snyder’s Krypton to be something completely different;

I really wanted my Krypton to be this kind of special place that’s immersive and totally different from Earth, but not unbelievable. And ancient. I really wanted to give this ancient feeling to Krypton. I love technology that’s rusty because it’s so old. It’s so advanced, but it’s so old. That was the kind of world that I tried to create. A dying world that’s ancient and torn apart.

What I’m liking so far with this take on Superman, is just how fresh it feels. I’ll give the folks of the previous Superman films credit, for creating something that lasted for so long and had such a massive influence. But it’s time to move on. Give us something fresh, something new. Don’t make Man of Steel the kind of film that has a character named after Christopher Reeve and then wink your eyelids so damn hard at the audience that they begin to tear.

It’s time for a new era for Superman.
