Look! Up in the sky! Is it a bird? Is it a plane? And why the hell are two people so excited about birds and planes in the first place? No, it’s a speeding box office runaway success story! As if there was any doubt, it looks like the Man of Steel film cleaned up nicely at the cinemas over the North American weekend setting a few new records and successfully erasing the horrible taste of Superman Returns from the minds of everyone who saw that ridiculous flick back in 2006.

Flying high, the latest Superman flick clocked in over $113 million at the box office, surpassing the records set by previous June releases such as Toy Story 3, and placing just second in the all-time June releases, behind The Hunger Games. It’s a much better result over 2006’s Superman Returns, which when adjusted for inflation, scored $102 million back then on an opening weekend.

Meanwhile, proving that 3D is still a format that no one wants to see the flick in, box office totals for Man of Steel showed that 2D won out in favour with the crowds, by a 59% margin. But Man of Steel wasn’t the only flick debuting. This is the End arrived that same weekend, as the apocalypse comedy scored up over $20 million in leftover audiences, a figure that is lower than previous films starring familiar faces, such as Pineapple Express and Tropic Thunder. As for everyone else, here’s how they did:

  • Man of steel – $113 Million
  • This is the end – $20.5 Million
  • Now you see me – $10.3 Million
  • Fast and Furious 6 – $9.4 Million
  • The purge – $8.2 Million
  • The internship – $7 Million
  • Epic – $6 Million
  • Star Trek into darkness – $5.6 Million
  • After Earth – $3.7 Million
  • Iron Man 3 – $2.9 Million

Looks like Iron Man 3 is on the way out, but after a worldwide tally of $1.2 Billion, Disney and Marvel should be more than happy with that performance.
