When everyone is competing for a slice of the same Young Adult genre movie pie, there’s bound to be a few movies that get left with less than nothing on the table. Take The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones as an example. It’s the kind of movie that ticked all the cliched boxes for those kinds of films, but it bombed pretty badly at the North American box office.

Well never say die, because it looks like its parent company still has some hope left for this potential franchise.

At the North American box office, Mortal Instruments made only $31.6 million after a few weeks, while international interest in the film was higher, earning it $49 million. That’s over $80 million, and while it doesn’t sound bad, you’ve got to remember that the Mortal Instruments was a $60 million film with a heavy advertising presence. So if there was any profit, it wasn’t much at all, if it even existed.

Constantin Films reckons that there still might be some life in the franchise yet, and are moving on with the sequel City of Ashes.

Speaking to THR Martin Moszkowicz, Constantin Film’s head of film and TV, said that author Cassandra Clare’s fan base had responded positively to the adaptation and that the company was determined to continue the franchise:

The fan response, from the blogosphere and the thousands of mails we have received, has encouraged us to keep going. It’s been overwhelmingly positive, in contrast to some other YA titles. We are analyzing what we did wrong with the first film, particularly with the positioning and marketing, and what changes we have to make.

We are working with a great group of people to reposition the franchise (for City of Ashes).
The readers of Mortal Instruments are older than you might think. That may have been one issue in our marketing, that we focused too much on a very young audience segment.

That, and the fact that the movie was more cliched and dumbed down than a soap opera for children who wear safety helmets to school. Director Harald Zwart is most likely to return for a second gig behind the camera, with actors  Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Kevin Zegers, Robert Sheehan, Jemima West, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Sigourney Weaver also making a comeback.

Yeah, I thought they would indeed be switching things up, but alas. What I find hilarious is how they say that maybe they just marketed the movie wrong, not we made a film that was a colossal train wreck.
