1984

Big brother is watching you. A couple of decades ago, that might have felt laughable at best, but these days I can’t even tweet about my ass-gas without an FBI black ops team invading my room and telling me to get my hands in the air and wave ’em around like I do very much care. George Orwell saw the current state of privacy invasion coming many, many years ago and wrote a book about it called 1984.

That year may have come and gone, but it did produce one very memorable film. And now that movie is being turned into a horror reboot.Or a romance film to be exact, but you’ll see where I’m going with this. According to US Magazine, Kristen “Zoolander modeling expressions” Stewart will star in the film which will up the love factor considerably:

Kristen Stewart is hooking up with Jennifer Lawrence’s boyfriend . . . on the big screen. The 23-year-old actress has signed on to star opposite Nicholas Houltin the upcoming futuristic love story Equals. In a recent interview with The Associated Press, Stewart explains why she’s nervous to take on the part.

The original film dealt with a dystopian future where having the wring kinds of ideas in your head would bring the Thought Police knocking at your door. Privacy was an outdated concept, history was constantly being rewritten and getting on the wrong side of the cerebral fuzz would result in getting a fatal dose of vaporisation. It’s not an easy film to watch, but Stewart reckons that the core concept is easy:

“I can’t believe I agreed to do it,” Stewart told The Associated Press on Monday, Jan. 14. “I’m terrified of it. Though it’s a movie with a really basic concept, it’s overtly ambitious.”

Hoo boy, this movie is already in trouble. Especially due to the fact that it’s going for the luv demographic as Stewart explained:

“It’s a love story of epic, epic, epic proportion,” she added. “I’m scared.”

That makes two of us then. This project won’t be known as 1984 though, because that’d just be stupid and at least some shred of intelligence is still alive here. This particular version however will be known as Equals, and it’ll be based on the 1956 adaptation as opposed to the 1984 version of, er, 1984:

Equals is an adaptation of the 1956 film 1984, which itself was based on George Orwell’s classic novel about rebellion in a futuristic society. The project begins filming later this year with director Drake Doremus, who also directed Lawrence, 23, in 2011’s Like Crazy.

“I trust Drake’s process and I know we will do something really natural and real,” Stewart said of the project. “But I told Drake, ‘Don’t expect that I am going to be able to do this. It’s too hard.’ But he wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. I’ve given directors disclaimers before, but never this much.”

Er, I’m already not keen for the movie and this was just the announcement. The 1984 1984 has held up pretty well, and stars John Hurt in the lead role. Funnily enough, Hurt would later play the head of a fictitious party that controlled all form of society in V for Vendetta. Neither of which were crap.

I just found it really sad that they’re making a new version of a movie that was based on a book. Talk about playing telephone. Why not just, I don’t know, use the book. And then the comments from that walking plank were enough to make me literally face palm. George Orwell could probably power a small city from all the spinning in his grave.

Agreed. It is also such a relevant book to cover in present times. Having Walking Plank try salvage her career (did she have one) using this is sad. BUT my friends, she can apparently feel fear…

Who do you think they’ll cast as her wacky sidekick? They’ll need to draw the teen market, so either Beyonce or Lady Gaga? I mean, this is 1984 we’re talking about. It’s just a silly love story.
