Aaron Paul has had meetings win Ron Howard about THE DARK TOWER

At times it almost seems like the quest to adapt The Dark Tower to the screen has becoming even more of a sprawling epic than Stephen King’s fantasy opus itself. But it looks like the development Gears are still turning as a certain Breaking Bad star has apparently been in meetings about it. Ka-tet, bitch!aaron_paul-dark_tower

Quint from over at AICN has mentioned in the past that he feels that Aaron Paul, who played the meth slinging Jesse Pinkman on Breaking Bad, would be a great pick to play Eddie Dean, the junkie and first time drug mule who gets caught up in an epic quest to save all of existence when his path crosses with that of the mythical gunslinger Roland Deschain. And when Paul debuted his latest film, Hellion, at the Sundance Film Festival, it gave Quint the opportunity to mention this to Paul. And as it turns out, somebody else already had the same idea.

Quint: For what it’s worth when I watched the first season of Breaking Bad I immediately thought you’d be perfect as Eddie Dean in a Dark Tower movie. I don’t know if you’ve read those books…

Aaron Paul: I have not read them all. He shows up midway through the second book, right?

Quint: Yes. I know it’s typecasting a little bit, but you’d be my choice for the part.

Aaron Paul: Thank you. I’ve had a ton of meetings on that. I just had a general sit down with Ron Howard, who is a huge fan of the show (Breaking Bad, naturally), which is such a crazy thing to even think that Ron Howard even knows who I am. They’re definitely planning on making it.

Quint: It’s such a tough series to crack, man. I don’t envy them trying to make it work.

Aaron Paul: I’m excited. Their goal is to do three films, but also have a television element to it, which will be very interesting. From what I hear, Eddie Dean is a pretty epic, iconic character.

Quint: You should definitely pick up the books. He’s really the heart and clear conscience of the group. Eddie’s a really complex and interesting character. He gets to have a great romance… It’s a good role is what I’m saying, so don’t turn it down when they offer it to you!

Aaron Paul: (laughs) Definitely will not!

So not only are Howard and co apparently still going ahead with their ambitious plan of a trilogy of movies, with a season of TV series in-between each feature film to bridge the gaps, but they are still meeting with actors around casting. Take note though, that meetings are just that -nobody has been offered anything yet, although Paul certainly seems keen for the role if it should come his way. Personally, I think that he could indeed make a superb Eddie Dean. As Quint mentioned, this is a bit of typecasting, as we’ve already seen Paul, as Jess Pinkman, go through and do a lot of the stuff that is required of Eddie Dean, but hell, if the guy is really good at something, we might as well take advantage of it.

Now if only Javier Bardem’s schedule can open up so that he can start having meetings about playing a certain gunslinger.

  1. I still wonder if this will see the light of day. It’s a massive commitment for a massive story.
