The-Incredibles

Love it or hate it, but 3D is going nowhere in the near future. Profits may be slowly declining, but that’s like removing sand from a beach as there’ll always be some of the stuff leftover. We’ve already seen the first two Toy Story movies get a 3D re-release, as well as the Pixar classic Finding Nemo. Now add Pixar’s first family and master rat chef to that list.

Speaking to Screen Daily, Pixar’s director of 3D production Josh Hollander revealed that the two films are headed to the third dimension:

Right now we’re working on The Incredibles, which is a lot of fun in 3D. I’m not sure what the release strategy for it will be. It’s been an interesting challenge to work on technology because – while the film was released 10 years ago – the technology is even older as it took four years to make.

Hollander added:

We have a version of Ratatouille, which works really well in 3D and we’re trying to figure out exactly what the release strategy for that will be.

Ratatouille is obviously the easier film to convert here, being a few years more advanced than The Incredibles. As for those of you who like not having the kind of mind-splitting headache that 3D films tend to produce, Hollander feels your pain:

I think that we as an industry may have lost some of our audience for 3D with releases that didn’t beg for the medium or didn’t warrant the medium or didn’t use the median in a nuanced and sophisticated and comfortable way. I think it’s possible that we drove some folks away from 3D with the higher ticket price or whatever else. But I also think that as the industry settles on a more nuanced approach, I really hope and believe that the audiences will return.

Now that’s some solid reasoning. If you’ve never seen The Incredibles, you’re missing out on one of the greatest superhero movies ever made. I’m not going to be racing to a cinema to go see it in 3D, but hell, I’d love to see a new generation of kids find out about it. Ratatouille, another Brad Bird effort is also a visual masterpiece, even though the story was lacking and doesn’t elevate it to Iron Giant or The Incredibles levels. A solid film though, and worth watching once in your life.

In 2D.
