Right now, if Hollywood was a farm owned by a certain ol’ Scotsman, there would be a YA adaptation here, a YA adaptation there. Here a YA, there a YA, everywhere a YA adaptation! And the latest addition to this funny farm is The Maze Runner, an adaptation of James Dashner’s novel, directed by Wes Ball, a first-time feature film director who landed the gig based on his fantastic short film, Ruin. That film marked him as a talent to keep an eye on, and based on this first, surprisingly dark and sop-free trailer for The Maze Runner, it seems that Ball may just live up to that potential and come sprinting out of the blocks, instead of stumbling in his first few steps.

When Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) wakes up trapped in a massive maze with a group of other boys, he has no memory of the outside world other than strange dreams about a mysterious organization known as W.C.K.D. Only by piecing together fragments of his past with clues he discovers in the maze can Thomas hope to uncover his true purpose and a way to escape. Based on the best-selling novel by James Dashner.

The Maze Runner stars Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Will Poulter, Thomas Brody-Sangster and Aml Ameen, and will be running into cinemas on September 19, 2014.

  1. I just do NOT understand why YA (they’re TEENAGERS, not young adults!) crap appeals to actual adults.

But this looks promising right? Either way I enjoy watching mindless movies every now and then. I think enough at work.

Can’t watch the trailer at work :/

It’s just an automatic response, reason gets replaced with rage when I hear YA. It’s like the “cloud power” for books & movies.

Occasionally – VERY RARELY – the stuff is actually written well enough that it crosses the age gap and can be appreciated by more than just teens. The first Hunger Games book was one of these (though book 2 and 3 much less so). But like I said, this is VERY RARE.
