An amazing wallcrawler swung into cinemas this week, with everyone hedging bets at 2:1 that Spidey would conquer the box office. And that he did, as the ol’ webhead easily took the first spot. The question though, was if this sequel could at least spin some more cash out of the franchise when compared to the moderate opening of the first movie. And yes, yes it could indeed.

Andrew Garfield

Trouncing 2012’s first re-debut, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 took in over $92 million on opening weekend.  That’s a massive improvement on the first film, which made $62 million on opening weekend a couple of years back in North America markets. Internationally, the extra week and a bit has helped, as Spidey is now webbing up a pile of cash that amounts to over $369 million so far. Expect this film to top the final tally of $752 million of the 2012 relaunch at this rate, and possibly top 2007’s Spider-Man 3 in the profit game.

With great profit comes great second-place losers. Here’s how the rest of the box office did on the weekend.

  • The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – $92 Million
  • The Other Woman – $14.2 Million
  • Heaven is for real – $8.7 Million
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier – $7.7 Million
  • Rio 2 – $7.6 Million
  • Brick Mansions – $3.5 Million
  • Divergent – $2.1 Million
  • The Quiet Ones – $2 Million
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel – $1.73 Million
  • God’s not dead – $1.72 Million

Top ten departures this week include Bears, A Haunted House 2 and Transcendence. The directorial debut of Wally Pfister has bombed spectacularly at the box office, as a three week run has resulted in just $54 million off of a $100 million budget. A Haunted House 2, suckered in enough masochists to make $16 million off of a $4 million shooting allowance. That’s a 400% return, anyway you slice it.

  1. I was tempted to go watch Spider-man 2 on the weekend, but then realised I’d have to roll out of bed – and I was very comfy.
