Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • By now I’m guessing everybody has seen “Watchers on the Wall”, the penultimate episode of Game of Thrones‘ fourth season? Director Neil Marshall (The Descent, Centurion, Doomsday) deserves lots of praise for producing one of the best directed battle sequences (because that’s essentially all this episode was) we’ve seen on our screens, both big and small, in ages. However, if there’s one criticism I can level at him, it’s his failure to use this very fitting musical cue for one of the episode’s most gut wrenching moments.

  • Forget the years or the mileage, it’s all about the collapsing space ship door. As reported last week, Harrison Ford sustained an ankle injury on the set of Star Wars: Episode VII, in which he reprises his iconic role as Han Solo, after the prop door of his ship, the Millennium Falcon, reportedly collapsed on his foot. It doesn’t appear to be a major injury (despite some sensationalist headlines claiming he was crushed!), but according to the latest reports he is going to have to miss up to eight weeks of filming. If the rumours that Solo will have a major part in the new film is true, this is going to be a real headache for director JJ Abrams and his crew.
  • Posters of the Day: Dracula Untold – Which is actually a long-in-development new take on the Dracula origin story starring Luke Evans as the infamous Vlad Tepes, but based on these posters could easily be mistaken for a medieval version of Chris Nolan’s Batman.
  • Warm Bodies star Theresa Palmer has been cast as the female lead in Alcon’s reboot of 90’s action thriller classic Point Break opposite Luke Bracey, Edgar Ramirez and Ray Winstone, who will respectively play the roles originally made famous by Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze and Gary Busey. It is uncertain whether or not Palmer’s role is the same as the one originally portrayed by Lori Petty or something new. Also, there’s still no clarification on the inclusions of meatball sandwiches and lying on your back, screaming to the sky, as you repeatedly fire your gun.
  • So if you’ve read my review of Edge of Tomorrow, you would have seen that while I loved the movie, I felt the film’s timey-wimey ending to make about as much sense as, well, a highly acclaimed, Oscar nominated actor throwing away all his public good will by joining a religion that sounds like badly written sci-fi and jumping up and down on a couch on TV. The main problem with the ending is that it breaks its own rules of time travel. This is a crime that lots of time travel movies are guilty of. That and the fact that the way they time travel is pretty much scientifically impossible. I know this, not only because I paid attention in science class at school and grew up to be a major geek, but also because of this cool video from Screen Junkies where they brought in a couple of real scientists to debunk movie time travel myths.

  • According to various set reports and scathing tabloid articles, Russell Crowe has been called many things, but very rarely was one of them “nice guy”. But I guess he’s going to have to learn the ropes from chronic nice guy Ryan Gosling, as the pair are apparently being eyed to star in The Nice Guys, a 1970’s set noir flick from fan favourite writer/director Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3, Lethal Weapon), which follows a Los Angeles-based private detective and a fighter as they try to solve a murder together. According to the reports negotiations with the two men are still very tentative though, as there may be some scheduling issues, but seeing as the last time Crowe dabbled in a LA-set noir film, we got the brilliant LA Confidential, I’m hoping that they can work this one out.
  • The end-credits sequence of Rise of the Planet of the Apes cleverly showed just how David Hewlitt’s character inadvertently spread the contagion that would wipe out most of humanity, but based on my conversations with people over the years since that movie came out, it’s clear that lots of people either missed it, or just didn’t bother watching the credits at all (I mean, who does that, right? Right?!). Which is why this video from 20th Century Fox, which depicts the events that happened between the end of that movie and the start of the upcoming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, may just come in handy.

  • Ever wonder how they pull of some of the incredible (and I mean that in a bad way) disfigurements seen on Game of Thrones, Penny Dreadful and the like? Well, then you need to head on over to the Instagram page of Sangeet Prabhaker, the make-up and effects artist that’s actually responsible for a lot of the twisted forms you see on TV’s high profile shows.

Just check out how well he pulled off Jaime Lannister’s severed hand, without having to chop off actor Nikolaj Coster- Waldau’s own extremity.

  • If you’re not a fan of the Resident Evil franchise and just keep asking when it will end, well then writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson has an answer for you. Chatting to Collider, Anderson revealed that the previously rumoured 2014 release date for the sixth film is utter nonsense as he has just begun writing the script. And the very telling name of that script? Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is the working title.  It may end up being the final title, but that’s what’s written on the front page of my script… I’m right in the middle of [the first draft].”

“There are no set dates for shooting yet.  I think we’re waiting until we have a first draft screenplay and then go from there. I don’t know [when it will be in theaters], depends how fast I write, I guess.  There’s no set date yet but hopefully we’ll have an announcement for that soon.”

  • If Zack Snyder’s Justice League were to borrow several pages from The Avengers (and starred action figures instead of real people) then this is totally what it would look like. Totally.
