Klondike

Even though this place is called “The Movies”, we’ll often feature trailers/articles for TV series. However, this may be the first time I’ve done a trailer for TV series that has already aired and is in fact finished. But the thing is that somehow Klondike just slipped under the radar. And yet, when you see who’s involved in it, it’s kind of hard to imagine how it did.

Produced by Ridley Scott, the 3-part mini-series stars Richard Madden (probably better known as the doomed Robb Stark in Game of Thrones), Tim Roth, Abbie Cornish, Sam Shephard, Tim Blake Nelson, Martin Csokas and more.  That cast alone should have grabbed my attention, and somehow it didn’t as the show already aired earlier this year with nary a whiff from my side. And based on this trailer and pretty great reviews of the mini-series, Klondike tells quite the rip-roaring tale of survival in the late 19th century American gold rush.

Discovery’s first scripted mini-series, announced last year, is based on Charlotte Gray’s book Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike. Her tale brings to life the story of six strangers and their collective fight for survival and wealth in a small frontier town in the remote Klondike.

Klondike follows the lives of two childhood best friends, Bill and Epstein, in the late 1890s as they flock to the gold rush capital in the untamed Yukon Territory. This man-versus-nature tale places our heroes in a land full of undiscovered wealth, but ravaged by harsh conditions, unpredictable weather and desperate, dangerous characters including greedy businessmen, seductive courtesans and native tribes witnessing the destruction of their people and land by opportunistic entrepreneurs.

As mentioned earlier, the mini-series already aired earlier this year on the Discovery Channel, but can currently be watched on VOD services like iTunes. Something that I plan to do quite soon to rectify my oversight.

  1. Gawd! So amped! After Deadwood ended so abruptly with Season 3. I’ll take this as it’s spiritual successor.
