Like the great Rick James once declared, “Cocaine is a helluva drug!”. And if you were the infamous Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, it could build you a helluva empire, one that put fear in the hearts of your enemies and food on the tables of your people. Also, about $30 billion in your pocket. In short, Escobar was one intimidating individual when he was at the height of his power in 1990’s.

Now imagine you’re some gringo trying to date his niece. Unfortunately for Josh Hutcherson, he doesn’t have to imagine, as that’s exactly what his character tries to do in Escobar: Paradise Lost. And doubly unfortunately for him, Escobar is being played by Benicio Del Toro, who by all accounts turns in a truly scary, monstrous performance that already has the pundits talking about his award season prospects. And you can see a whole lot of that performance in this new international trailer for the movie.

Based on true events, the story follows a young man, Nick (Josh Hutcherson), who visits Colombia and falls in love with a girl named Maria (Claudia Traisac). Things get a little more complicated, however, when he learns that Maria’s uncle is the infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar (Benicio Del Toro).

Escobar: Paradise Lost was written and directed by Andrea di Stefano. It is scheduled for release on November 26, 2014.

I loved Del Toro in Che, so this is great news. And finally a Pablo Escobar biopic!
