BWAAAAAPP!! The Inception foghorn has become a staple in movie trailers ever since Chris Nolan started telling Leonardo DiCaprio to go deeper (not like that, you pervs!). The ear-drum shattering soundbyte has since been used to denote any major action beat in several trailers, much to the ever-increasing annoyance of fans.

And for some reason its in the latest trailer for Maps To The Stars, a new small-scaled drama from acclaimed director David Cronenberg, and for which star Julianne Moore has already garnered top accolades at Cannes. There are no giant robots destroying a city, or badly CGI’d freak meteorological phenomenon flattening a town, or even just a creepy dude with a big kitchen knife trying to stab somebody. Instead it’s possibly the most unnecessary use of the foghorn we’ve seen thus far. Mia Wasikowska puts down a bag of groceries? BWWAAAAAAPP!

Irrespective of the overly-dramatic nature of this trailer, Maps To The Stars is still something I would really like to see based on the presence of Cronenberg, as well a great cast rounded out by John Cusack, Robert Pattinson, Sarah Gadon, Evan Bird and Olivia Williams.

In “Maps to the Stars,” Stafford Weiss (Cusack) is an L.A. psychotherapist and life coach who has made his fortune with self-help books promising happiness. His wife Cristina (Williams) is the overbearing manager of their 13-year-old son, Benjie (Bird), a TV star and recent drug rehab grad. Their estranged daughter, Agatha (Wasikowska), has just been released from a psychiatric hospital and befriends limo driver and aspiring actor Jerome (Pattinson). Among Stafford’s celebrity clients is Havana Segrand (Moore), a fading star who dreams of reprising her late mother Clarice’s (Gadon) starring role. Ambitions, ghosts, death, and all manner of vices bedevil the cast of characters.

Maps To The Stars is scheduled for a limited release on 26 September 2014, before opening wide sometime in 2015.
