The first trailer for Tim Burton’s ‘not featuring Johnny Depp or Helen Bonham Carter’ Big Eyes is out and it looks like it’s going to open some eyes… Wide… Based on the true story of Walter Keane (Christopher Waltz, me thinks Oscar material, again) and his wife Margaret (Amy Adams, Oscar nominee for American Hustle) the story tells of their rise to fame and how they changed the art industry into the commercial beast we now know. Walter manages to fool the world by selling his wife’s paintings, something of a necessity as the role of women back then was one designated to mother and wife, not brilliant artist. He doesn’t just sell them though, but turns them into the mass produced ‘copy of a copy/simulacrum’ like much art has become today. Needless to say the shenanigans can’t carry on for long and it ends up in a nasty court between the two. It has some definite Burton elements, freaky images of people with big eyes as Margaret struggles with hiding the truth and I can honestly say I am really looking forward to this movie!
Big Eyes boasts a strong cast too, with Krysten Ritter (Confessions of a Shopaholic), Terence Stamp (The Limey), Jason Schwartzman (The Darjeeling Limited), and Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine)
