Oh, Paul Thomas Anderson, you insanely talented man (not to be confused with Paul W.S. Anderson of Resident Evil fame, who arguably meets 1/3 of that description). The five-time Oscar nominated filmmaker has been mainly been producing intense, gruelling dramas over the last few year, but based on this first trailer for his latest flick, Inherent Vice, he seems to have gotten his boogie (nights) back.

Starring a Wolverine-like Joaquin Phoenix, if Wolverine was a drunk detective with a thing for really big hats and army surplus coats, Inherent Vice is an adaptation of acclaimed author Thomas Pynchon’s bestselling novel of the same name, and it looks just brilliant!

Boasting a truly stellar, star studded cast that seem to all just be having a fantastic time with what seems like a cracker of a script that was adapted by Anderson himself, this just seem like rollicking good time to be had in the cinema. Plus, you can even get some free Japanese lessons from Josh Brolin!

“Inherent Vice” is the seventh feature from Paul Thomas Anderson and the first ever film adaption of a Thomas Pynchon novel.

When private eye Doc Sportello’s ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a loony bin… well, easy for her to say.

It’s the tail end of the psychedelic ’60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” that’s being way too overused—except this one usually leads to trouble.

With a cast of characters that includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, LAPD Detectives, a tenor sax player working undercover, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists… Part surf noir, part psychedelic romp – all Thomas Pynchon.

The rest of Hollywood, take note! That’s how you cut together a trailer!

Inherent Vice also stars Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro, Martin Short, Jena Malone and Joanna Newson. It is scheduled for international release on December 12, 2014, but we’ll have to wait until February 15, 2015 before we get to see people hitting Joaquin Phoenix upside the head for hilarious effect.
