Plenty of new films hit the North American box office this weekend, hoping to sink their fangs into a slice of the profits. Surprisingly however, the biggest contender there failed to dethrone Gone Girl, as the Ben Affleck starring thriller held onto the top spot for a second week in a row. Let’s see who won and lost the box office over the weekend then.

Dracula Untold (1)

Despite being a fairly solid film, Dracula Untold only made it to second place, drinking in $23.4 million. Not exactly a solid start, but still better than the opening weekends of similar monster fare such as I Frankenstein ($8.6 million) and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter ($16.3 million). Worldwide however, Dracula Untold is doing fairly brisk business with a total haul of $86 million. Expect this film to at least reach the $200 million mark in international sales before it finishes its run. Here’s how everyone else did:

  • Gone Girl – $26.8 Million
  • Dracula Untold – $23.4 Million
  • Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day – $19.1 Million
  • Annabelle – $16.3 Million
  • The Judge – $13.3 Million
  • The Equalizer – $9.7 Million
  • Addicted – $7.6 Million
  • The Maze Runner – $7.5 Million
  • The Boxtrolls – $6.6 Million
  • Left Behind – $2.9 Million

Top ten departures this week include This Is Where I leave You, Dolphin Tale 2 and Guardians Of The Galaxy. It’s been a blockbuster run for a project that sounded perhaps far too risky. The James Gunn film however, was a massive smash hit, taking in over $687 million worldwide, over an 11 week run at the USA box office. That’s better than the first Captain America film ($370 million), Thor ($449 million) and even the Superman reboot Man Of Steel ($668 million). Now that’s what Hollywood calls an Awesome Mix.
