SUPERGIRL could crossover with ARROW and FLASH

Supergirl

Supergirl is one of those shows we have very little information on at the moment other than it’s in development, which means one thing – RUMOURS AND SPECULATION YO! Is that two things? Don’t know, don’t care – I won’t let something like no facts stop me from reporting the news!  But in time, little details emerge like the casting calls below but first an interesting little tit-bit.

Greg Berlanti, executive producer of Arrow and Flash as well as the in-development Supergirl, is featured in the 5 December 2014 edition of Entertainment Weekly magazine, and KsiteTV were kind enough to pull this nugget from the article:

Later in the afternoon at his other office on the Warner Bros. lot, Berlanti meets with fellow producer Ali Adler and Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood to go over looks for their upcoming revamp of Supergirl. The show will follow 24-year-old Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, and with a twist that that could melt fanboy brains, Berlanti says it’s possible this Supergirl could enter the worlds of Arrow and The Flash.

Now bear in mind that while Arrow and Flash exist within the same universe and are crossing over in the upcoming weeks, they both air on the same network – The CW. However Supergirl is in development for CBS, so any crossover between the lady and the tramps would require a fair bit of cooperation and cross-promotion between the two networks. So while I would love for this to happen and think it would be really good thing to establish the Supergirl TV series, I see this more as a throw-away comment about there being some talk around it being possible as opposed to a confirmation. So for me this is just a rumour right now, but I’d be happy to be wrong about that.

One thing I do have, thanks to TVLine and more TVLine, is casting details for leads Kara and her sister Alexandra, and some supporting characters that also provide a bit more information on the direction of the show:

Kara Zor-El aka Kara Danvers: The show is eyeing Caucasian females, age 22 to 26, to play 24. As the series’ mythology goes, Kara at age 12 was sent from her dying home planet of Krypton to Earth, where she was taken in by the Danvers, a foster family who taught her to be careful with her extraordinary powers. After repressing said skills for more than a decade, Kara is forced to bust out her super moves in public during an unexpected disaster. Energized by her heroism for the first time in her life, she begins embracing her abilities in the name of helping the people of her city, earning herself a super moniker along the way.

Alexandra “Alex” Danvers: Kara’s [26 year old] gorgeous, brilliant, science-minded foster sister. Growing up, Alex was partly jealous of her sibling yet also fascinated by her abilities, prompting Alex to learn as much as she could about alien anthropology, sociology and culture. Today, Alex works for a secret government organization and, alongside her heroic sis, will face many challenges, both mundane and super.

Cat Grant: The project is eyeing females in their 40s, open ethnicity, to play the founder of CatCo, a media conglomerate that Cat built from the ground up. Kara (Supergirl’s mild-mannered alter ego) will work as a personal assistant to Cat, who is described as “J.Lo by way of Anna Wintour.”

James Olsen: In his late 20s/early 30s, open ethnicity, James is a smart, worldly and (duh) attractive photographer for CatCo. Though an alpha male, his salt-of-the-earth nature elicits a huge ol’ crush from Kara.

Winslow ‘Wynn’ Schott: This twenty-something tech whiz/Comic-Con stalwart toils for CatCo as a programmer, unaware of his own (toying?) potential. Unware of her secret, he carries a torch for Kara, whom he lives next door to.

Hank Henshaw: As an upstart CIA agent, Hank grew obsessed with intergalactic intel. Now in his 40s and lording over the DEO (Department of Extra-Normal Operations), he is on high alert when Supergirl reveals herself, worried that her otherworldly abilities pose a threat to humankind.

Going by the details above, the series certainly seems a good fit for a shared TV universe (TV galaxy?) alongside Arrow and Flash. While Superman (and Batman) are not meant to be referenced in the current DC-based TV series, it certainly seems like Supergirl is channeling Superman in a big way, especially with the inclusion of his pal Jimmy Olsen. And those last two names mentioned – aka Toyman and Cyborg Superman respectively. Although as I just said they’re not allowed to reference Superman so who knows how they’ll handle the latter – turning Hank Henshaw into Cyborg Supergirl would certainly be a bold choice. Actually now that I’ve thought about it… that would be insane. DO IT!

While I expect them to go with relatively unknown actors for these parts, is there anyone you’d like to see cast in any of these roles?
