Video game to movie adaptations have a Hollywood track record that’s rockier than the Thing’s ID photo, but I’m still holding out hope for two upcoming attempts: the Tom Hardy and director Doug Liman’s Splinter Cell, and the Michael Fassbender produced/starring Assassins Creed. We’ve heard next to nothing about the former other than the talent involved, but the latter has given us some updates over the last year or so. Unfortunately, most of those updates were just along the lines “yes, we’re still working on it”.

But now Fassbender has finally given us some concrete info when he spoke ComingSoon.net. First he explained what the hold-up has been with the long gestating film, but also that they now finally have a production start date set.

“You say it’s a long time but what I’ve found — it’s all new to me but starting to develop scripts and work on them, they take time. It just takes time to get a good story together and we really want to do it right. It’s exciting. It’s going to start this year, we’ll be filming in September.”

The series of Assassins Creed games focuses on various members of the Assassins – a group opposing the secret Templars, who are hellbent on capturing and using several mysterious artifacts to manipulate the world to their advantage – scattered throughout different time periods, so deciding which of them the movie focuses on could be quite difficult. This is why most people assumed that Fassbender would be playing Desmond Miles, the young assassin from the future, whose DNA is used to observe the lives of his ancestors (future video game technology, just go with it). Seeing as how he is the one character that ties all the stories together, this made the most sense. But apparently, that’s not the case.

“[Smiles] You don’t know that [that I’ll be playing Desmond]. Don’t listen to what they tell you, that’s the first rule.”

Oh, that cheeky Fassbender! For those not in the know, he is actually referring the actual Assassins’ Creed stated in the game: “Nothing is true, everything is permitted”. So exactly who would Fassbender be playing and which story in the franchise – which by now features over 10 games, numerous novels, comic books and animated movies – would the movie be adapting?

“That’s always the challenge of something that’s so dense, to really find something and pare it down and basically, there are so many elements to it, so trying to translate that to an audience, you have to pick key things. So yes, that is part of it, getting through the density of it and paring down and engaging a simple story.”

Assassins Creed also stars Marion Cottilard, and is directed by Justin Kurzel, who just finished directing both Fassbender and Cotillard in Hamlet. The movie is scheduled for release on December 21, 2016.
