Demolition is an upcoming comedy-drama from director Jean-Marc Vallée (the rather excellent Dallas Buyers Club) that stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a widower trying to find meaning in his life. Actually I lie, he’s not looking for meaning, he’s trying to find anything in his life.

The official plot synopsis is as follows:

Davis (Jake Gyllenhaal), a successful investment banker, struggles after losing his wife in a tragic car crash. Despite pressure from his father in law Phil (Chris Cooper) to pull it together, Davis continues to unravel. What starts as a complaint letter to a vending machine company turns into a series of letters revealing startling personal admissions.

Davis’ letters catch the attention of customer service rep Karen (Naomi Watts) and, amidst emotional and financial burdens of her own, the two form an unlikely connection. With the help of Karen and her son Chris (Judah Lewis), Davis starts to rebuild, beginning with the demolition of the life he once knew.

Let me tell you, as someone who’s rapidly closing in on the big three-oh (and totally maybe not fudging that number by a decade) there are parts of that trailer I can easily identify with; and I guess I won’t be the only one.

There’s also a decidedly indie feel (it is a Fox Searchlight movie after all) from the way he describes his life and its changes in the matter-of-fact, even-toned voice-overs. Judging by the trailer it also seems to have resisted the temptation to descend into the maudlin, which is always a risk in these types of movies. All-in-all it looks like something I’d very much like to watch, how about you?

Demolition, directed by Jean-Marc Vallée with the screenplay by Bryan Sipe, is due for release next year on 8 April (US release date); it stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Naomi Watts, Chris Cooper, Judah Lewis and Heather Lind. Yes Darryn, Demolition is also one of the best WWE tag teams, I know, now stop poking me.

  1. Looks like a decent movie I’d like to watch with my wife.

      “Do you miss her?”
      “I’m trying to.”

      That right there, damn.
