LET THEM FIGHT! King Kong and Godzilla will throw down once again

King Kong. Godzilla. Two of the biggest names (Pun freakin’ intended) in the movie monster industry. The two kaiju are so massive that they’ve only crossed paths once in their entire career, in 1962’s King Kong vs Godzilla.

Kong won that debut fight, but it looks like a rematch is being organised, a new rumble in the Monster Island jungle. According to Deadline (via Collider), the currently in production prequel to King Kong,  Kong: Skull Island, is being shifted from Universal to Warner Bros.

The reason why? Warner Bros. is home to the new Godzilla franchise that kicked off last year, and it looks like the studio wants to go for a shared universe approach that will have all the various monster properties lined up. In other words, prepare for King Kong vs. Godzilla: Dawn of Jet Jaguar. I’m expecting Gal Gadot to be revealed as the voice of Mothra.

To lead up to that point, Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla 2 will set the scene, building the foundation for the showdown. It’s an odd business move from Godzilla production company Legendary as they actually just parted ways with Warner Bros. last year, but it does make sense for the story at this point.

It’s still early days on all of this though, with Kong: Skull Island currently still casting. Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Corey Hawkins are still set to star, with reports coming in that Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Wilkinson and John C. Reilly are all in talks to fill major roles.

There are even fewer details on Godzilla 2, as Warner Bros. seems content to take their time with this franchise, although a sequel is set for a June 8, 2018 release date. I’m damn excited for this showdown. We’ve got the technology, and 2014’s Godzilla is fine proof of a kaiju battle done right.

King Kong is going to need to start bulking up for the fight though. The last time he was on the big screen was in Peter Jackson’s 2005 flick, where he measured in at a height of 25 feet or an entire eight metric meters. And that was big! But puny compared to the 2014 Godzilla, who stood tall at a height of 150 meters. Kong is going to need to do some serious training.
