The Forest

Ah horror movies, my old nemesis – we meet again. Set in Aokigahara Forest, Japan, The Forest is an upcoming horror movie from first-time director Jason Zada and stars Natalie Dormer (Games of Thrones, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1) as a woman searching for her twin sister in a haunting wilderness.

The official plot synopsis is as follows:

AHHHHH! RUN!

Okay, maybe not. There isn’t one. Damn it, it looks like I’m going to have to watch this trailer after all and figure it out for myself instead of just winging it as usual.

Sara (Natalie Dormer) has always shared a special connection with her identical twin sister, and when she goes missing in the infamous Aokigahara Forest in Japan, Sara sets out to find her. Descending into the depths of the forest, Sara uncovers far more than she expected when she ventures off the safe paths between the haunted trees – where the restless souls of the dead wander.

Aokigahara Forest, at the base of Mount Fuji in Japan, features prominently in Japanese mythology with demons reputed to dwell in its depths. It’s also known as the Sea of Trees as it’s so dense that very little outside noise can penetrate its boundaries; and is more infamously known as the Suicide Forest due to the number of people who’ve entered it to commit suicide. So much of what you’re seeing on the trailer is a nice blend of fact and myth, which really appeals to me because it makes it all seem more real.

The movie looks beautifully shot, and the stunning scenery certainly contrasts well with the horror being presented. Thanks to her acting talent Dormer has been steadily rising up the Hollywood ranks over the last few years, and those talents look to be on full display here once again. What do you think horror fans, interested?

The Forest is due for release in the US on 8 January 2016, with no local release date as yet. It’s directed by Jason Zada, with the script by David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight), and stars Natalie Dormer and Taylor Kinney (Chicago Fire).

  1. Good actress, good script writer, interesting plot, pretty interesting trailer… I’ll definitely give this a watch when it’s released. Dunno if I can convince the Mrs to join me though…
