Marvel and Fox co-creating two X-Men spinoff series for TV… WHAT?!!!

Here is a sentence no one was expecting to read in their lifetimes. Marvel and Fox have teamed up to co-develop two TV shows set in the X-Men universe.

So somewhere in the ooze that is the feud between Fox refusing to allow Marvel to even use the word mutant anywhere in their cinematic universe (did you notice that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, the offspring of Magneto, was referred to as “enhanced” in Avengers: Age of Ultron) and Marvel killing off their main X-Men (Wolverine) in the comics and replacing him with a female version while refusing the merchandising rights for X-Men products… yea, somewhere in that mess of a sentence Marvel has struck up a deal with Fox which could see the tide of animosity between the two studios turning by bringing two shows, namely Legion and Hellfire, to TV.

Fox Entertainment president David Madden had this to say about partnering up with Marvel:

“We are thrilled to partner with Marvel to bring this world to television and build upon the vibrant mythology that has captivated fans for years. These powerful and dynamic characters are complicated and larger-than-life, the pace and visual imagination are unrelenting, and the story takes place during one of the most explosive eras in recent history. ”

Legion has already been given a pilot order at FX and will be written and produced by Noah Hawley (Fargo) while Hellfire will be developed by Evan Katz (24: Live Another Day), Manny Coto (24), Patrick McKay (Star Trek 3), and JD Payne (Star Trek 3).

Courtesy of Geektyrant we know that Legion “introduces the story of David Haller: Since he was a teenager, David has struggled with mental illness. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real.” As comic book geeks should know, David Haller is actually the estranged son of Professor Charles Xavier and a ridiculously powerful mutant – he has hundreds of different personalities, with each one possessing a different power set, and each trying to take full control of his body.

FX’s Nick Grad added to that saying:

“Legion is just the sort of ambitious story that Noah excels at. His adaption of Fargo for television was one of the most acclaimed television events in recent memory. It’s also an honor to partner with Marvel on Legion and to enlist such an accomplished team of Executive Producers to create this pilot.”

Then there is Hellfire which will be set in the late 1960s, and “follows a young Special Agent who learns that a power-hungry woman with extraordinary abilities is working with a clandestine society of millionaires – known as ‘The Hellfire Club’ – to take over the world.”

In the comics, the Hellfire Club was an aristocratic organization run by the mutant Sebastian Shaw, while also featuring such notable members as Emma Frost and even an evil Jean Grey (well, the Dark Phoenix really). Now if you recall, we’ve already seen Sebastian Shaw in the 1960’s – he was the main villain in X-Men: First Class, played by Kevin Bacon – so it’s uncertain just how this will tie into the movies’ timeline.

Would love to see that Legion series… no surprises there, I guess. Can’t wait to see how they bring the character to life.
