Horror movies just don’t have that bone chilling, look behind you in the dark effect on me anymore. I need to think back to the days when I watched my Betamax copy of A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master repeatedly for a good scare. Since then I have been on the lookout for that movie that will leave me utterly horrified and slightly disturbed.

In 1999 I was treated to one such film in The Blair Witch Project, a horror flick that burns brightest and had me properly freaked out. Now I must admit to the fact that I actually believed the events appearing in front of me, which made a huge difference.  I then had to wait until 2013 to get freaked out again with The Conjuring – using some solid acting, interesting characters and the freakish, possessed doll Annabelle had audiences screaming in their seats around the globe.

Enter Brahms – the new frightening entity in The Boy.

The story centers around a young American woman, Greta (Lauren Cohan, The Walking Dead) that takes a job as a nanny to a young boy named Brahms while the child’s wealthy parents go on a vacation. She quickly discovers that Brahms is in fact not a real boy but a life size porcelain doll molded on the parents lost son.

If that is not enough the couple leave Greta a strict list of rules to follow while caring for their son and warn her that following these rules are imperative otherwise something terrible might happen.

You can meet the needy Brahms in this trailer below.

Now Greta strikes me as a smart enough woman to realize this job is probably best left alone but for some reason she ignores the warning signs and takes the job. This is of course good for us as The Boy could just be the next best thing to happen to the horror genre in the foreseeable future – or at least I hope it will be.

What I get from this trailer is nothing that we haven’t seen played out before. Scary Doll is possessed and torments family, adults avoid all signs that say –  Return to Toys-R-Us immediately – and add in a mix of creepy music with the sounds of eerie children’s laughter. The filmmakers it seems are saying, yes this is nothing new but see if you still don’t get the heck scared out of you!

The movie is written by Stacey Menear and is her feature debut as a writer and directed by William Brent Bell (The Devil Inside, Stay Alive). It is also the first lead in a feature for Cohan who is supported by Jim Norton, Diana Hardcastle, Ben Robson, Rupert Evans, James Russell and Javier Botet.

For now I am going to give these guys the benefit of the doubt and hope that the movie delivers on what seems to be a promising fix for my horror movie needs.
