Well, it had to happen some time. The might Star Wars: The Force Awakens has finally been pried off the top spot on the US box office chart. And all it took was an angry black cop, a fast talking loser and a weirdo Asian guy –  all of which actually sound like the setup for a joke, although in this case it will be them doing the laughing. All the way to the bank.

Ride Along 2, which sees Ice Cube and Kevin Hart return in the buddy action comedy sequel (with some help from franchise newcomer Ken Jeong), opened in the States this weekend past and pulled in $34 million on debut. That’s actually down from the first film’s take, and it only achieved a B+ Cinemascore as opposed to the A of its predecessor. But on a slow holiday weekend (it’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day today) which saw the box office take a 22% dip overall, that was still enough to dethrone Star Wars from the top spot it had held since release on 18 December.

Ride Along 2 wasn’t the only movie that got one up on The Force Awakens though, as The Revenant did this weekend what it almost got right the week before, ending up ahead of Disney’s behemoth with $29.5 million. It was the highest profile of all the Oscar nominees on the list, all of which (Room, Bridge Of Spies, Spotlight, Brooklyn, The Big Short and The Martian) received strong box office boosts, with the limited release Room receiving a 504% bump jumping up from 33rd to 19th. And people say awards shows are good for nothing.

The Force Awakens still brought in a very respectable $25 million which garnered it 3rd place and also now pushes its domestic total to $856 million dollars. More importantly though, its weekend haul in the rest of the world has now pushed its international box office figure past $1 billion, making it only the 5th film in history to surpass that mark. Its Chinese box office has been a bit disappointing though as the film was pushed off several screens this weekend past to make room for a local production. Thus far it looks set to max out at $150 million or less in China, when Disney and Lucasfilm were clearly hoping for a figure much further north of $200 million. In other words, Avatar‘s all-time crown of $2.7 billion looks completely safe at this point in time.

Meanwhile Michael Bay’s latest, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, eschewed robot fart jokes for real life politicizing but didn’t quite blow up at the box office the way Bay is accustomed. Despite an endorsement from Donald Trump, the patriotic military action drama only pulled together a 4th spot worthy $16 million. Meanwhile, the only other new entry on the charts, the animated comedy Norm of the North (and probably Tracy’s current no.1 pick for Best Movie of 2016), somehow managed to convince $6.67 million worth of people to go see it, giving it 6th place over the weekend.

Let’s see what the rest of the US chart looks like:

  • 1. Ride Along – $34 million (NE)
  • 2. The Revenant – $29.5 million (LW: 2nd)
  • 3. Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $25 million (LW: 1st)
  • 4. 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi – $16 million (NE)
  • 5. Daddy’s Home – $9.3 million (LW: 3rd)
  • 6. Norm of the North – $6.6 million (NE)
  • 7. The Forest – $5.79 million (LW: 4th)
  • 8. The Big Short – $5.2 million (LW: 7th)
  • 9. Sisters – $4.4 million LW: 5th)
  • 10. The Hateful Eight – $3.44 million (LW: 6th)

This week sees the exit out of the top 10 for Alvin and The Chipmunks, Joy and Concussion, with the latter dropping down a whopping eight places to 18th. Ouch. That would be the biggest fail on the charts this week if it wasn’t for Point Break, which in its 4th week drops a massive 80%, from 11th to 21st place, bringing in just $421 000 on this last weekend. Extreme ouch! It’s domestic total now only stands at a paltry $27.9 million, and with a $105 million production price tag, I think we can now officially declare it the first big box office bomb of 2016.
