Fast and Furious is one franchise that has seemingly being going in reverse from the usual trend we are seeing in movie franchises, where the first is the best and then each sequel tries to live up to the original. This is one franchise that has gotten better over time and while the characters may run a little stale – there is always something fresh for them to get caught up in that is even more entertaining than the last.

The next installment of the Fast and Furious franchise has now officially got a name and a poster. Vin Diesel himself provided the official title, which is going to be in line with the last film titled Furious 7 and will be called Fast 8… Let’s hope the actual script has some more thought put into it than the naming conventions used for these movies, but based on the success of the last movie, I don’t think it matters what the name is. As the trailer indicates, Universal is planning to release the movie on April 17, 2017.

No details of the plot have emerged as of yet, but what we do know is that they are yet to actually start shooting. Variety reports that the filmmakers are still seeking potential location in which to shoot:

Universal Pictures is currently in the process of seeking approval from the United States and Cuban governments to explore shooting a portion of the next installment of the ‘Fast & Furious’ series in Cuba

While we wait on more word of the plot, the director of Fast 8, F Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) is getting really excited for the film and in a talk with Collider shared his thoughts on how he can bring something fresh to the franchise and spoke about his conversations with Vin Diesel and their shared love for the franchise:

We were both really excited to get back together and do it again. We talked about all of the Fast movies up to this point, and where could we go. I think he was really happy with the vision I have for the franchise and I was really happy about where he sees not only his character going but the franchise itself, because he’s a producer as well. So it was all love. Definitely all love.

Its great that everyone is excited for the film, but excitement doesn’t always equate to a successful movie. When quizzed on how he is going to build on the films action set pieces to perhaps up the ante even further, he replied:

It’s a combination of both. When you look at someone good like J.J. Abrams who gives you the spectacle and great action set pieces but also gives you character and great story and plotting and narrative, I think it’s my job—and my intention—to do both. You amp up everything, you work on the performances, you work on the story, you work on the action; it’s just not one thing. Hopefully I bring more to it, that’s part of the point is to bring something different to the franchise while still satisfying what the fans want.

Gray himself is no stranger to action, but this will certainly be the biggest project he has ever undertaken and it will be exciting to see what he can bring to he table. The last film in the franchise ended rather poignantly and powerfully, so when quizzed on what he was going to be bringing from that film to the next one, he had this to say:

All I have to say is I’m extremely excited about the direction we’re going in, and we’re really pushing to make sure the audience feels like it’s not more of the same. They feel like it’s fresh, they feel like the characters they’ve come to know and love are there, but this is gonna be different, and that’s probably the most I can give you right now. It’s kind of top secret.

The franchise certainly needs something fresh if it is to keep going. Although the last one was a massive hit, I suspect a lot of that was in part to the death of star Paul Walker and which also gave the last film a lot of its emotional pull. They will certainly need to explore a variety of fresh ideas to try and top that experience.

Do you share Gray’s enthusiasm for the franchise or should they have left it on a high at the last one?
