Confirmed: THE FLASH will crossover with SUPERGIRL

Despite being on different networks, speculation has been swirling around a potential super-powered crossover between Supergirl (on CBS) and the Arrow-verse shows (Arrow, The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow – all on The CW) ever since the co-executive producer of all the DC TV series, Greg Berlanti, said in an Entertainment Weekly magazine feature way back in December 2014, “it’s possible this Supergirl could enter the worlds of Arrow and The Flash.” While significant, the airing-on-different-networks problem wasn’t a particularly big one because The CW is a joint venture between CBS and Warner Bros. Entertainment.

However since then Andrew Kreisberg (Berlanti’s co-executive producer) poured cold water on the speculation by saying, “Quite frankly, just making the Arrow-verse, which is what we call Legends, Flash and Arrow work and then making Supergirl work, it’s enough of a challenge without having to add a fourth player.” CBS’ Nina Tassler gave a definite maybe-one-day when she said ,”Right now we’re not doing it. We’re doing it promotionally, but we’ll always stay open.”

Fans have never stopped hoping though, and now it’s time to put all that will-they/won’t-they drama behind us because it’s official – Berlanti and Kreisberg have confirmed in a joint statement (via Comic Book Resources) that Supergirl and The Flash will crossover:

We are so incredibly excited to announce something that we have dreamed of happening since we starting making ‘Supergirl’ — The Flash and Supergirl are teaming up! We want to thank Grant Gustin for making the time to come visit (on top of his already immense workload) and all of the folks at CBS, The CW, Warner Bros. and DC for working this out.

And finally thanks to the fans and journalists who have kept asking for this to happen. It is our pleasure and hope to create an episode worthy of everyone’s enthusiasm and support.

Grant Gustin’s The Flash will make an appearance in the Supergirl episode set to air on 28 March. While they haven’t said anything about where, why or how this’ll work in-universe (particularly since no mention of flying aliens has ever been made before in the Arrow-verse), MINOR SPOILER FOR SEASON TWO OF THE FLASH presumably it’ll have something to do with Barry’s ability to make anything happen by running really, really, really, ridiculously fast – and in this instance run into another alternate universe where Supergirl exists. The Arrow/The Flash crossovers have been very entertaining, and the now-upcoming Supergirl/The Flash crossover is one I’m very keen to watch. Melissa Benoist has been killing it in her role as Supergirl, as anyone who watched her unleash her anger on the Red Tornado can attest, so maybe she can teach Barry to stop bottling everything up and moping around like a super-emo instead of a superhero. Seriously Barry, you’re becoming worse than Arrow season three Ollie – stop it.
