There are few things in this world that make me more happy than BBC One and the awesome dramas they seem to keep churning out. I recently signed up for Netflix (yes, I know) and got to enjoy the very awesome Broadchurch, a crime drama that only the British could make. Not only is the show well acted, with actors like David Tennant and Olivia Colman bringing their A-game, but the whole production boasted class on so many levels. Well it looks like they have gone and done it again, only this time with the international best seller The Night Manager by John le Carré. It was only last week I was writing about his other new movie Our type of Traitor so it would seem the world is currently loving the spy thriller genre.

So what is it about?

The Night Manager mini-series will bring together love, loss and revenge in a complex story of modern criminality. The eagerly anticipated series follows former British soldier Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston) as he navigates the shadowy recesses of Whitehall and Washington where an unholy alliance operates between the intelligence community and the secret arms trade. To infiltrate the inner circle of lethal arms dealer Richard Onslow Roper (Hugh Laurie), Pine must himself become a criminal.

That seems straight forward, so why are you so excited Nick? Well do you know who is in it? Let me tell you! Only the BRILLIANT Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie, Olivia Colman, Tom Hollander, and Elizabeth Debicki. What?! Yes, that is some serious caliber. I haven’t seen Laurie in anything recently and him playing a mafia boss just seems perfect. Have a watch and see what you think:

Hiddelston has become one of my favourite actors of recent years. His intensity (I think it’s the eyes) is almost palpable on screen and having him next to legend Huge Laurie is going to have me hooked to the small screen. The six part mini series was directed by Susanne Bier (Serena) who had this to say about the show:

David Farr’s elegant script perfectly orchestrates the central cat-and-mouse game between these two irresistibly flawed characters. That Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston will be playing Roper and Pine, respectively, is so thrilling to me. Their shared soulfulness, precision and sharp humor will seduce us all, both through Roper’s charming yet insidious manipulations and Pine’s unsettlingly enigmatic struggle to do the right thing.

The Night Manager premiers 19 April. To say I am excited is an understatement!
