Director Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner is a sci-fi masterpiece. Technically brilliant, groundbreaking, allegorical, layered and just plain cool. What it isn’t though, is mysterious. Well, not any more. For years fans went back and forth regarding clues that hinted at the possibility that Harrison Ford’s Deckard was actually not human, but one of the actual Replicants it was his job to take down. Even Ford himself wasn’t sure for years. Eventually though, Scott settled the debate once and for all by declaring that yes, Deckard was indeed a Replicant.

Case closed? Apparently not. At least not when it comes to Denis Villenueve, the acclaimed Canadian director of such modern greats as Arrival, Sicario and Prisoners, who has been tapped to helm the long awaited sequel to Scott’s seminal 1982 film, Blade Runner 2049. Villenueve spoke to French site Allocine, and said… well, I don’t know what he said, since my grasp of French extends purely to rude words, asking for different types of pastries and quoting “Lady Marmalade” lyrics.

Luckily the folks at The Playlist were able to translate, revealing that Villeneuve intends to not actually directly address what Deckard is, saying that “it was very important to him not to break the tension of the mystery that lingers around Scott’s original movie, or solve all its riddles.” Now you might think this was all a moot point, as Harrison Ford is reprising his role thirty years later as Deckard. As any good Blade Runner fanboy knows, Nexus 6 Replicants could only survive for four years before automatically shutting down, which means that him still being around is definitive proof that he is actually human despite what Scott said. Right?

Unfortunately, that is “not necessarily” true, according to Villeneuve. The director doesn’t go on to elaborate though, but as Playlist speculates, its entirely possible that Deckard was some later, more advanced Replicant model. Perhaps he was unwittingly part of some trial or experiment? After all it didn’t make much sense to stick a replicant in his position without him knowing about it, unless you wanted to how well he could fool everybody around him as well as himself. Let the speculation begin!

You have less than a year to come up with your own theory, as Blade Runner 2049 is scheduled for release on 6 October, 2017. Joining Harrison Ford in the cast will be Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, Robin Wright, Ana de Armas, Dave Bautista, Barkhad Abdi and Lennie James.
