Last week we heard from director Denis Villeneuve that his highly anticipated upcoming sequel to Ridley Scott’s seminal sci-fi classic Blade Runner would not be addressing the mystery of whether Harrison Ford’s character in the original was a Replicant or not. And now we may know why: there just won’t be enough time.

While news of Ford reprising his role as Rick Deckard in Blade Runner 2049 was admittedly a big deal, it seems that his role may not be. While chatting to Fandango about the upcoming La La Land, co-star Ryan Gosling revealed that Ford actually only joined the production way after it had already begun.

I can say that we shot for many months before Harrison [Ford] arrived, and obviously there was a lot of anticipation as to when he would show up and how that would be, and it was just a relief. The second he got to set, he just rolled up his sleeves and we all just got to work. It was a real great pleasure to get to work with him.

So what does this mean? Well, up until this point, it had been assumed by many that Ford and Gosling would be equal leads on this, possibly in some kind of buddy-cop fashion (as much as there is a buddy-cop conceit in this universe). Instead it now looks like Ford may in fact just have more of an extended cameo. Or maybe it will be like him reprising his role of Han Solo in The Force Awakens, where he only showed up in the second act and helped to move the story along quite a bit, but then had the new generation take centre stage again in the final act. It’s all up in the air.

We still don’t know what Blade Runner 2049 will actually be about, so this is all still rampant speculation. For all we know, Ford is actually the “bad guy” here that needs to be hunted down, much like how he had to hunt down Rutger Hauer’s Roy Beatty in the original. Or maybe the 74-year old Ford is now just too old to do a full shoot. Who knows?

What I do know is that Villeneuve is a creative enough filmmaker, that I don’t really care to try and guess too much how this is going to play out. And since I think every movie he’s ever made is practically a masterpiece of its respective genre, I have faith in whatever he’s cooking up.
