There is quite a lot of excitement about the new Wolverine movie, Logan being aimed at a R-rating. I personally have never got the thrill behind whether a film is R-rated or not, as I just want to see a good movie with a complaining story, but there was still a desire from fans to see an edgier and more violent Wolverine, more in line with some of the darker comics of the character. And they are finally going to get that experience, in possibly Hugh Jackman’s last take on the character (unless Ryan Reynolds can change that). However, it almost wouldn’t have been if it weren’t for Hugh Jackman influencing it, by taking a pay-cut. As reported by Uproxx after they learned the news at a recent screening in the US:

That might sound a little unfair, but R-rated films are traditionally not as big money makers as PG rated films and as such the studio was concerned about making a profit on the movie if it didn’t meet this age determinant. So, Jackman, wanting the film to be edgier, decided to take it upon himself to influence the studio. So, dear fans who wanted this, Jackman took the sacrifice so that you can get the Wolverine movie you’ve always wanted.

Logan is not the first attempt at making an R-rated movie however. Director James Mangold originally shot both R and PG-13 version of The Wolverine only for the studio to cancel the R-rated version in favour of keeping it PG-13. As a result of this, Mangold and Jackman wanted to secure the R rating from the start which led to the drastic measure Jackman took. Mangold got to speak earlier in the year about the freedom of making a movie that came with an R-rating:

[This represents] to me the kind of aggressive, classical Wolverine action that we want in the movie – more of something that fans have been asking for, for a really long time. We’ve been limited in one way or another from giving it to them, but I think we’ve got the go-ahead to really go for it on this picture. So we’re really trying to deliver what folks have always imagined those kind of battles would look like. There is a lot of high-octane action in the movie. We’re just trying to do it very differently and very viscerally.

However just because a movie is R-rated, doesn’t mean it will be better. So was all this effort with it. While although no official reviews have been released, there have been a few tweets from those who’ve seen the movie who have the following to say:

So, it seems the overwhelming response is yes – the R-rating is going to work out for this movie. Personally I love the fact that it won’t feel like a comic book movie, as being different is what the film really needs. And excited that X23 is getting so much love. If she represents the future of this type of character in the X-Men movies, then that’s a good thing.

So, I hope you all are taking note of this and are willing to repay Jackman’s faith in the vision for this film with tickets at the cinema to show studios, just as Deadpool did, that comic book movies don’t all need need to be like The Avengers to be successful.
