Secret Empire (2)

Good and evil. They used to be such simple concepts, with the side of good usually triumphing with a moral upper hand over the forces of evil. And by upper hand, I mean spandex-clad fist being thrown at terminal velocity into the face of some gaudy-attired supervillain who was looking to do something properly naughty. Like fire orphans into the sun or play music on their smartphones without the use of headset while in a shopping mall. The fiends.

Secret Empire (4)

When it comes to fighting the good fight, you usually don’t get a character any more on the side of justice than Captain America. This is a superhero whose very first appearance was on a cover where he punched the fillings out of Hitler. That’s pretty much a straightforward statement as to where the loyalties of this character lies, but thanks to some cosmic tinkering, the first Avenger isn’t rolling a 20 into the lawful good zone anymore.

And that’s because Captain America is kind of a villain now. A secret one that is, a sleeper-hero who takes orders from the Red Skull, whose grand plan for the revival of Hydra is in full-swing right now. Thing is, the Captain has a plan of his own, one that includes a world where the population of red-faced supervillains who happen to have a piece of Charles Xavier’s brain surgically attached to their cerebrum is kept out of the equation.

That’s the latest event that Marvel is teasing, as the house of ideas sent out a teaser image for the upcoming saga:

Secret Empire (1)

The idea of a Secret Empire isn’t exactly a new fixture in Marvel. In fact, various versions of the organisation (an offshoot of Hydra that operates in the darkest shadows) has faced off against Captain America and SHIELD in the past, with it’s leader at one time even being none other than US President Richard Nixon. Who then killed himself when the ruse was uncovered, instead of allowing himself to be captured and eventually turned into one of the best characters on Futurama. AROOOOO!

Still, it’ll be interesting to see how Rogers functions as the latest number one in the Secret Empire, especially in light of the recent revelation at the end of Civil War 2 that hinted that he might not even survive to see his plans come to fruition.

I’m just below the threshold needed for a British Colonel to wander in and to tell me that I’m being too silly.

It nice to see america’s greatest hero is just a facade. He was always “too righteous”, the same for the MCU version. I wonder when this will be worked into the MCU, if it ever happens. Coulson might die again from the shock.
